Known for her rich soprano vocals as the lead singer of the 1960s band the Stone Poneys, Linda Ronstadt opened up about her Parkinson’s disease diagnosis to AARP The Magazine in 2013. After two very bad tick bites in the 1980s, Ronstadt says her health never fully recovered but she didn’t visit a neurologist until she was no longer able to sing.
“I didn’t know why I couldn’t sing all I knew was that it was muscular or mechanical. Then when I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, I was finally given the reason. I now understand that no one can sing with Parkinson’s disease. No matter how hard you try. And in my case, I can’t sing a note,” she told AARP.

Blumenthal was born into a Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Jane and Martin Blumenthal. He has a brother, David Blumenthal, who became president of the Commonwealth Fund. Their father became president of a commodities trading firm. His maternal grandfather, Fred “Fritz” Rosenstock, raised cattle on his farm, where Blumenthal and his brother often visited as youths. Martin immigrated to the United States alone at the age of 17 from Frankfurt, Germany; Jane was raised in Omaha, Nebraska.
Blumenthal attended Riverdale Country School in the Riverdale section of the Bronx before graduating from Harvard College with an A.B. degree magna cum laude as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. As an undergraduate, he was editorial chairman of The Harvard Crimson. Blumenthal was a summer intern reporter for The Washington Post in the London Bureau. He was selected for a Fiske Fellowship, which allowed him to study at the University of Cambridge in England for one year after graduation from Harvard.

Blumenthal Definitely Supports Stem Cell Research

Blumenthal made that clear Thursday afternoon to two dozen Yale scientists, research advocates, diabetes activists, and seniors hauled in to fill out a room at the Yale Stem Cell Center on the first floor of the Amistad Building.
Standing upstairs from the lab where Yale graduate student Annie Le was murdered last September, Blumenthal vowed to fight to reverse a judges Monday decision that puts a temporary halt to $54 million in federally funded research on embryonic stem cells.
Blumenthal promised, as Connecticut attorney general, to file an amicus brief in support of an appeal planned by the Obama administration Department of Justice, which seeks to overturn Mondays ruling by D.C. Chief Federal District Court Judge Royce C. Lamberth.
And he promised that if elected Connecticuts next U.S. senator, he would vote to overturn the Dickey-Wicker amendment, a Congressional appropriations rider which prevents federal money from supporting research that involves destroying human embryos. The judges Monday decision was based on that amendment.
I disagree with the judges decision, Blumenthal told the group, which appreciated the sentiment.
He said the Dickey-Wicker Amendment needlessly … injected politics into science.

Sen Blumenthal’s Needless Lyme Disease Act
Recent legislation concerning Lyme disease introduced by Connecticut’s junior senator, Richard Blumenthal, appears on the surface to be well intentioned. A press release issued by his office last week stated the Lyme and Tick-Borne Disease Prevention, Education and Research Act would “combat the growing epidemic of Lyme disease in New England and across the country.”
It is hard to argue with legislation that supposes to combat disease. And it’s easy to score political points in crusading against a disease endemic to the state you represent. This explains why Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, both Rhode Island Democrats, and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., are cosponsors. Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut also climbed aboard as a cosponsor after the original introduction of the bill.
This is not exactly political risk-taking. It’s not as if anyone is in favor of Lyme disease.
But by taking a closer examination of the bill and placing it in the context of Sen. Blumenthal’s background on the matter, it becomes apparent this is not good legislation. Indeed, it’s potentially harmful. It seeks to politicize a subject that lawmakers should leave to the impassioned assessment of the scientific community. It would create another needless layer of bureaucracy when both federal and state governments already have ample resources to assess and deal with Lyme disease.
