Newly added to the list of things that are maybe killing you: diet soda. You know, the artificially sweetened beverage that you might be drinking in place of its sugary counterpart that experts previously said will kill you. Honestly, its getting a little hard to pick up a beverage these days without wondering if its contributing to your untimely demise.
But back to diet soda. Youve probably seen the headlines about a new study linking diet soda consumption with a higher risk of death. Which, yeah, big if true! Heres what you need to know about that.
In early September, JAMA Internal Medicine published a massive European study that linked both regular and diet soda to a higher chance of early death. We found that people who drank two or more glasses of soft drinks a day were at greater risk of dying earlier , irrespective of whether they were sugar-sweetened or artificially sweetened, lead study author Amy Mullee, Ph.D., a professor at the University College Dublin Institute of Food and Health, tells SELF. Specifically, those who often had two or more glasses of sugar-sweetened soda every day were 8 percent more likely to die early than those who kept their soda consumption to less than one glass a month, and those who regularly had two or more glasses a day of diet soda were 26 percent more likely to die early than those in the less-than-a-glass-of-diet-soda-a-month club.

The motor benefit of caffeine were documented in a pilot open-label, 6-week dose-escalation study and a 6-week randomized controlled trial of caffeine involving 61 PD patients . These clinical studies suggest that caffeine improved objective motor deficits in PD with the reduced total Unified PD Rating Scale score and the objective motor component. Furthermore, coffee consumption is associated with the reduced hazard ratio for the development of dyskinesia compared with subjects who consumed <112 mg/day in the Comparison of the Agonist Pramipexole with Levodopa on Motor Complications of Parkinsons Disease and CALM Cohort extension studies . Based on these positive findings, caffeine was recently investigated for motor and disease-modification involving 121 PD patients PD in a phase 3, 5-years , two-arm, double-blind RCT, with a primary outcome focused on motor symptoms and disease-modification as a secondary outcome1. Unfortunately, with the primary outcome analysis after 6 months demonstrating no significant symptomatic benefit of caffeine , the study was terminated earlier than the planned.

Aspartame may also cause a change in norepinephrine. Compared with dopamine systems, which restrict their outputs to the reptilian brain and frontal cortex, the projections of the caudally situated noradrenaline systems are more widespread. The cell bodies of the noradrenergic neurons are concentrated in the brain stem, particularly in the locus coeruleus within the caudal pons . Five major noradrenergic tracts originate from the locus coeruleus that disperse through the whole brain. There are also clusters of noradrenergic cell bodies in the nucleus tractus solitarius and in the lateral ventral tegmental field . Fibres from these nuclei intermingle with those from the locus coeruleus. The A6 noradrenaline cell group, well known as the locus coeruleus, controls higher brain activity through the dorsal noradrenaline pathway. This group sends inputs to the cortex, hypothalamus, cerebellum, lower brain stem and spinal cord, thereby exerting control over cortical arousal and attention, fear and anxiety, and learning and memory. The ventral noradrenaline pathway infiltrates the hypothalamus and the limbic system .

You’re Even More Likely To Die If You Choose Diet Soda
Despite the perceptions diet drinks are a better option than regular sodas, all sweetened drinks are bad for your health, according to new research.
Drinking more thantwo soft drinks a day is associated with a higher likelihood of early death, and drinking more than two servings of artificially-sweetened soft drinks is linked to a 26% higher risk of premature death, according to a JAMA Internal Medicine study published Wednesday that sampled 451,743 people from 10 European countries.
One of the study’s authors, Dr. Amy Mullee, professor at the University College Dublin Institute of Food and Health, wrote to the Washington Examiner that the results don’t necessarily mean that drinking soft drinks cause early death, but rather that there is a link. “There are other factors which may be behind the association we observed,” she said. “For instance, high soft drink consumption may be a marker of overall unhealthy diet.”
Even diet drinks, those that are artificially sweetened with low- or no-calorie chemicals, such as aspartame, stevia, or sucralose, are tied to gastrointestinal diseases. Sugar-sweetened soft drinks, or non-diet drinks, were associated with Parkinsons and cardiovascular disease.
Researchers did not only focus on sodas. They define the drinks as low calorie or diet fizzy soft drinks, fizzy soft drinks, eg cola, lemonade.
This study paints an inaccurate picture of the important role of these products for consumers,” Rankin said.
Is Diet Soda Unhealthy In Short No
Is there a diet soda health risk? In terms of proving diet pop unhealthy, the research overall is weak. Stuffing a rat full of pure sweetener and waiting for it to grow tumours, doesnt prove a hell of a lot.;
Population studies that try to link sweetener and diet soda to conditions that subjects were probably at risk for anyhow, doesnt prove anything to me.;
And shitty sources like Mercola, Josh Axe, Dave Bulletproof Asprey, and whoever else is saying that diet soda will kill you, arent reputable or worth listening to.;

Flaws In Efsa Assessment
In a July 2019 paper in the Archives of Public Health, researchers at the University of Sussex provided a detailed analysis of the EFSAs 2013 safety assessment of aspartame and found that the panel discounted as unreliable every one of 73 studies that indicated harm, and used far more lax criteria to accept as reliable 84% of studies that found no evidence of harm. Given the shortcomings of EFSAs risk assessment of aspartame, and the shortcomings of all previous official toxicological risk assessments of aspartame, it would be premature to conclude that it is acceptably safe, the study concluded.

Large European Study Links Soda Consumption To Greater Risk Of Mortality Including From Parkinson
A population-based study examining soda consumption in 10 European countries found that soft drinks were linked to a greater risk of death, as well as the chance of dying from Parkinson disease, although that connection needs additional research.
A population-based study examining soda consumption in 10 European countries found that soft drinks were linked to a greater risk of death, as well as the chance of dying from Parkinson disease.
The study, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, included both sugar- and artificially-sweetened drinks. The study group included 451,743 men and women from Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, comparing those who drank 2 or more glasses per day with those who drank less than 1 glass per month. There was a higher risk of death from all causes during an average follow-up of 16 years, in which 41,693 deaths occurred.
The authors said the findings support public health efforts to limit soft drink consumption; Tuesday’s study follows one published earlier this year in JAMA that found excise taxes on soda sales in Philadelphia reduced overall sales by 38%.
The data came from the ongoing European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition trial. Among other factors, participants were excluded if they had reported cancer, heart disease, stroke, or diabetes at baseline, as well as if they had missing soft drink consumption or follow-up information.

Eat Plenty Of Protein But Not With Levodopa Medications
If youre taking a levodopa medication, your doctor may tell you to avoid protein when taking your meds. Both animal and plant protein can interfere with the absorption of levodopa medications.
But you should still eat plenty of protein. Just be strategic with the timing. Dont take levodopa medications with meals, Dr. Gostkowski says. Its best to take it on an empty stomach either 30 minutes before your meal or an hour after eating.
If you get nauseous from the medication, eat a small amount of starchy food with it, such as crackers. Make sure whatever you eat with your medicine doesnt have protein. Its a misunderstanding that people with Parkinsons should avoid protein, Dr. Gostkowski says. You definitely need protein in your diet. Just dont eat it when youre taking your levodopa medication.

The Study Also Found That Daily Diet Soda Drinkers Were Three Times More Likely To Develop Dementia
These Boston University School of Medicine researchers also observed nearly 1,500 participants over the age of 60 for the development of dementia in correlation with diet soda consumption. According to their findings, people who drank at least one artificially sweetened beverage a day were three times as likely to develop dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease than those who did not consume diet soda. “Our study is the first to report an association between daily intake of artificially sweetened soft drink and an increased risk of both all-cause dementia and dementia because of Alzheimer’s disease ,” the researchers said.

A 2016 study in Applied Physiology Nutrition and Metabolism reported, Aspartame intake significantly influenced the association between body mass index and glucose tolerance consumption of aspartame is associated with greater obesity-related impairments in glucose tolerance.33

Foods That Are Hard To Chew
Many people with Parkinsons have difficulty with chewing and swallowing foods. A person needs medical help if this is the case. A speech and language therapist may be able to help a person overcome this issue.
However, if a person is finding certain foods hard to chew and swallow, they may wish to avoid these foods.
Such foods include:
- dry, crumbly foods
- tough or chewy meats
If a person does wish to eat chewy meats, they could try using gravy or sauce to soften them and make eating easier.
They could also try chopping meat into smaller pieces or incorporating meat into casseroles, which can make it more tender.
Having a drink with a meal can also make chewing and swallowing easier.

Aspartame has been linked to behavioral and cognitive problems including learning problems, headache, seizure, migraines, irritable moods, anxiety, depression, and insomnia, wrote the researchers of a 2017 study in Nutritional Neuroscience. Aspartame consumption needs to be approached with caution due to the possible effects on neurobehavioral health.16
Oral aspartame significantly altered behavior, anti-oxidant status and morphology of the hippocampus in mice; also, it may probably trigger hippocampal adult neurogenesis, reported a 2016 study in Neurobiology of Learning and Memory.17;

Two new studies reveal in stark terms how your diet can have a negative and long-lasting impact on your health.
One study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, found a teenager’s extremely poor eating habits caused him to effectively go blind.;
The other study, published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that people who drank at least two sugar-sweetened soft drinks a day had a higher risk of death from digestive diseases. It also found those who drank artificially-sweetened drinks had an increased risk of death from diseases that affect the circulatory system. Both groups had an increased risk of death from Parkinson’s disease.
Registered dietitian;Samantha Heller joined “CBS This Morning” on Wednesday to discuss these findings and how to break bad dietary habits.
Heller said she has heard anecdotally from patients about being “addicted” to artificially-sweetened beverages or sodas. “I don’t know if it’s technically an addiction, but how do you stop that? I think by slowly cutting back,” she said. “If you drink five sodas a day, maybe you have three.” She suggested replacing sodas with healthier drinks, like 100% fruit juice with a splash of seltzer, or herbal infusions, chamomile tea, green tea or berry tea, perhaps iced.
She recommended that parents pay attention to their children’s eating habits. “I think you have to be really careful and observational,” she said.;
