We do this because there is a lot of small studies out their claiming a specific food or nutrient will help with your Parkinsons while the truth is there really isnt any strong evidence for any of it. Worse yet, some of these foods or nutrients when taken in excess quantities can do more harm than good. The only real evidence-based diets that are shown to be good for Parkinsons are general healthy diets that work for everyone regardless of Parkinsons. The Mediterranean diet is one of the healthiest diets out there, which is why we recommend it to those with Parkinsons.

Youre referring to results of a study published in August suggesting that a healthy diet in middle age may prevent symptoms of Parkinsons that develop 10 or more years before the onset of the movement problems characteristic of the disease. These symptoms include constipation, daytime sleepiness and depression.

Parkinsons is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder worldwide after Alzheimers disease. It affects nerve cells in the part of the mid-brain known as the substantia nigra, responsible for muscle movement. The result is tremors, rigidity, slow movements, and difficulties with balance. The disease is progressive, eventually leading to disability and cognitive problems, including dementia. But it often develops slowly, causing only minor disability for a number of years following diagnosis.

The news that a healthy diet during mid-life may help prevent very early symptoms of Parkinsons comes from a Harvard University study that involved 47,679 people who were asked about their diet every four years beginning in the 1980s when they were middle-aged. In 2012, they were asked whether they had constipation and rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder . Both are common in people who are later diagnosed with Parkinsons.

Prefer Fresh Or Frozen Products

Observational studies have shown that in people who consume fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, olive oil, red wine, coconut oil, and spices, Parkinsons disease progresses at a slower rate. How Long Does It Take To See Results

Starting an anti-inflammatory diet isnt a magic pill. Your results will vary based on the severity of your intolerance and inflammation.

Drastic changes never lead to long-term success, so give yourself three to six months to make diet changes and to begin to see results, Zumpano advises. Begin by making small changes that you know will be impactful, and then slowly continue to add on.

In some cases, if you significantly react to a certain food, you may see results as soon as two to three weeks after eliminating that food from your diet.

This can be very encouraging and motivating, Zumpano says. Patients often tell me that they never realized how bad they felt until they changed their diet and began to feel so much better.

Eat Plenty Of Protein But Not With Levodopa Medications

If youre taking a levodopa medication, your doctor may tell you to avoid protein when taking your meds. Both animal and plant protein can interfere with the absorption of levodopa medications.

But you should still eat plenty of protein. Just be strategic with the timing. Dont take levodopa medications with meals, Dr. Gostkowski says. Its best to take it on an empty stomach either 30 minutes before your meal or an hour after eating.

If you get nauseous from the medication, eat a small amount of starchy food with it, such as crackers. Make sure whatever you eat with your medicine doesnt have protein. Its a misunderstanding that people with Parkinsons should avoid protein, Dr. Gostkowski says. You definitely need protein in your diet. Just dont eat it when youre taking your levodopa medication.

Combine Exercise With Diet

Dr. Gostkowski says if you want to feel your best, combine a healthy diet with exercise. Research has shown that regular exercise can improve PD symptoms.

Do exercise that raises your heart rate, Dr. Gostkowski says. Aim for about 30 minutes a day, five days a week. Dont worry about specific exercises. Do an activity you enjoy, as long as it gets your heart rate up. Try brisk walking or biking or more advanced exercise for veteran athletes. I recommend seeing an occupational therapist. They can tailor an exercise program to your needs.

Ethics Approval And Consent To Participate

This study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board-01 of the University of Florida and registered with ClinicalTrials.gov. Consent to participate will be obtained from all participants prior to the start of the trial by study coordinators. The results of this study will be presented at relevant scientific conferences and peer-reviewed journals.

Sample Collection And Analysis

Participants will provide a stool sample at 0, 4 and 8 weeks. Sample collection at week 4 will allow for a secondary analysis point if participant adherence to the intervention is suboptimal in the second half of the study. Stool samples will be collected using a commode specimen collection system . Participants will be instructed to portion approximately 1 g of stool sample into four tubes containing preservative and 3 mm glass beads and vigorously shake. Two samples will be preserved in 3 mL RNAlater and the other two samples will be preserved in 3 mL phosphate-buffered saline solution with a final concentration of 3% protease-free bovine serum albumin, 0.05% Tween-20 and 1% protease inhibitor for microbiota and inflammatory analyses, respectively. Participants will ship the samples overnight to the study site the day of or the following day after collection, and then stored at 80 until processing.

Measurements of intestinal permeability and inflammation

Faecal zonulin will be measured as an indicator of intestinal permeability. Intestinal inflammation will be assessed by measuring faecal calprotectin. Both biomarkers will be measured by ELISA. These inflammatory markers have been observed to be altered with PD and may lead to increased intestinal permeability.
