Adaptive Makeup And Hair Tips

Neurology – Topic 13 – Parkinson’s disease female patient

For many people with Parkinsons, applying makeup can be a challenge especially when fine motor skills are needed. Here are some tips for adapting the makeup application process:

  • Switch to skincare products with a pump mechanism or transfer your preferred products to bottles with a pump.
  • Apply makeup while sitting instead of standing. When possible, rest your arm on a surface to apply makeup. Consider purchasing a vanity mirror so you can apply makeup sitting at a surface in your home.
  • Use foam tubing grips. These grips can help provide more surface area for hand-held items, like brushes.
  • Purchase a hair dryer stand that you can attach to a surface.

Clothing And The Freeze Phenomena In Parkinsons Disease

Heres what happened when I put my new shoes on in a video demonstration. Below, I also describe in words what I an showing here.

Standing up, things felt very odd indeed. When I tried walking in them, the same old Parkinsons shuffle. No miraculous difference yet. But what these shoes allowed me to do was very quickly fathom out exactly what was wrong. As soon as I stood up in them, the pressure distribution of me feet told me immediately that my kinetic chain is way off. The shoes helped me understand that I was leaning forward the pressure was all on my toes, not on my heels. I was leaning heavily sideways too, so that the weight was mainly on the right leg. My balance was very wrong indeed!

Next I started being mindful that, according to Deb, when we walk properly and naturally, the motion actually begins in the glutes, not in the feet. Concentrating on this helped me to begin to take the first staccato steps where I could lift a foot much higher off the ground and then place it slightly forward. I tried to do this walking backwards too. These exercises again helped me tune into to what I was doing wrong.

Then I took the shoes off and the difference I felt was incredible, but this massive contrast in itself gave me yet more powerful clues about my imbalances and more understandings of how to progress.

The Role Of Estrogen In Parkinsons Disease

Parkinson

PD affects multiple areas of the body and brain. One of the areas most clearly affected is the substantia nigra pars compacta. There is great damage and death of nerve cells in the substantia nigra. These cells make dopamine, a chemical messenger that carries the signal for the muscles to produce smooth, purposeful movements. Damage to the substania nigra causes the movements common to PD, such as tremor, rigidity, and loss of spontaneous movement.2

Estrogen has been shown to have multiple effects on dopamine, including the amount of dopamine absorbed into the nerve cells.7 Plus, estrogen appears to have a protective effect on the neurons that produce dopamine.8 Estrogens effects on dopamine change based on menstrual cycles, menopause, and hormone replacement therapies.

Researchers are interested in the possible use of estrogen to slow the progression of PD. However, the complexities of estrogen pose challenges in designing clinical studies.7 In addition, not all studies show that estrogen has a protective effect.3 However, larger scale, placebo-controlled studies are needed.

Are There Differences In Parkinsons Treatment Between Men And Women

All current treatment options address PD symptoms, but they do not slow down or stop the progression of PD. Levodopa, often prescribed as Sinemet, is considered the gold standard therapy for Parkinsons movement symptoms. However, many people with PD experience changes in the effectiveness of the drug as the disease progresses. And some studies suggest that women are more likely than men to report these fluctuations earlier in the disease course and more frequently overall.

In particular, it seems that women are more likely to have involuntary movements called dyskinesias that occur when levodopa levels are highest in the blood. There are several factors that could be contributing to dyskinesia, including dosage, body weight and age of onset. Lower body weight can affect how medications build up in someones system. Lighter people sometimes need a smaller dose of medication to feel its effect. On average, women weigh less than men. If women and men are receiving similar doses, this may explain how levodopa levels are causing dyskinesias.

Physicians have also suggested that they find it harder to fine-tune Parkinsons medications for women than for men. Women more often experience large swings in symptoms from even small changes in medications or schedules.

Parkinsons Disease is a disorder of the central nervous system that affects your bodys movements.

This condition often begins gradually, usually with a small muscle tremor in one hand, then progressively causes your muscles to become rigid and your movement to get slower. Over time, your speech might get softer, faster, slurred or hesitant, without normal voice inflections, and your posture and balance can become impaired.

While the physical effects of Parkinsons disease can be extremely challenging, another difficulty can be the loss of independence that often comes with it, along with the way other people interact with you because your body behaves in new ways.

Parkinsons can impair your ability to make facial expressions, which can make it more difficult for people to connect and respond to you and increase your risk of feeling isolated.

One of the major worries for people with Parkinsons disease is the potential for a fall. In fact, some estimates say that between 45% and 68% of people with PD will fall every year. While several factors are involvedsuch as impaired balance, rigid strides, and freezing of muscleswearing supportive shoes with a rubber sole can be a big help.

What is Parkinson’s Disease?

Symptoms of Parkinsons disease tend to develop slowly and unpredictably and they are often different for every person. There are two main categories of symptoms: those that affect motor control, causing tremors and rigid muscles, and those that affect non-motor symptoms, including pain and dementia.

While symptoms develop differently for each person, they tend to follow a broad pattern. Very often, Parkinsons disease starts with a slight tremor in one hand. Sometimes it starts with persistent stiffness that doesnt go away as you move. As the disease progresses, you may experience:

  • Bradykinesia: This literally means slowness of movement. Your voluntary motor control is impaired and can lead to freezing, where you cant move for a period of time. This can be a major challenge for walking and increase the risk of falling.
  • Masked face: The inability to make facial expressions. Its caused by a combination of bradykinesia and muscle rigidity.
  • Festination: This is the scientific name for short, rapid steps. Footwear designed to help cushion the high impact of these steps can help ease the foot pain they often cause.
  • Cramping: This can affect your toes, making shoes with a wide toe box very important.
  • Cognitive changes: Increasing problems with memory, attention and planning.
  • Mood disorders: These might include depression, anxiety, apathy and irritability.

How Often Should My Shoes Be Replaced

Athletic shoes are built to last 3 to 6 months– or 300 to 500 miles- but as a person with Parkinsons, chances are, you are not walking or running as much as others. If youre using them to walk an average of 30 minutes a day, your shoes should last you 6 months. They may even last you longer it depends on how they hold up. If you see visible holes, signs of wear and tear, or if theyve lost their shape- its time for a new pair!

When it comes to being able to get around, footwear is just a small piece of the puzzle. There are plenty of other factors to consider when it comes to mobility that should be discussed with your doctor. Being well-prepared and knowledgeable on how to manage your symptoms is sure to improve your quality of life with Parkinsons.

Always consult your physician before beginning any exercise program. This general information is not intended to diagnose any medical condition or to replace your healthcare professional. If you experience persistent pain, consult your healthcare provider.

How Can Lasers Help

The lasers create visual cues that keep your attention and allow your concentration to remain on moving forward. Visual cueing with these specially equipped shoes was tested in the lab and found to be successful. Lines projected on the floor, created by movement in the opposite foot, give you direction to move.

Some people already use this approach, without the lasers, by crossing the street where there is a striped crosswalk. They also put tiles or floorboards in their home where they can move over the lines with each successive step. Visual cueing is used in other aspects of PD as well, particularly when addressing memory and psychological issues. Lasers are a new application in this area.3
