Rock Steady Boxing Keeps Parkinson’s Patients Moving

CAMERON – A program in Cameron looks to empower those with Parkinson’s to fight back against the disease. Now, the opportunity is expanding to Eau Claire.

“I’ve had the question asked, do you have someone in your family with Parkinson’s? The answer three years ago was no. Now the answer is yes. I have 30 of them,” said Allison Triebold, head coach of the local program.

Those fighters are battling back against PD with Rock Steady Boxing.

“We work on balance, we work on fine motor skills, we work on voice activation,” said Triebold.

“The more I did it, the more I got involved, it’s like there’s something here that I may go out of here really hurting, but the next day I feel really good,” said Roger Willis of Barron. Roger was diagnosed with Parkinson’s six years ago.

Dave Carlson of Northland Adventures is a fighter with Rock Steady Boxing.

The non-contact program began in Indianapolis in 2006. Today, there are hundreds of programs offered around the world, including in western Wisconsin.

Coach Triebold is leading the local charge.

“It’s really hard to find things in this world right now that are positive, and this is one, and I’m just really honored to be part of it,” said Triebold.

“Really when you get Parkinson’s they don’t tell you what to do. They just give you your medicine and send you home,” said Willis.

However, Rock Steady Boxing offers a chance to fight back physically and mentally.

Wolff, of Chippewa Falls, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2017.

High Intensity Exercise May Be Particularly Helpful

Its thought that high intensity exercise might be particularly beneficial for slowing the progression of PD.

In a 2014 study , researchers examined the benefits of high intensity physical therapy with gait training, strengthening, and perceiving cues on a group of 30 participants in the early stages of PD. They found that the exercise program stimulated increased levels of BDNF and had neuroprotective effects on cells that produce dopamine.

In a 2018 clinical trial , researchers found that a high intensity treadmill program where participants ran at 80 to 85 percent of their maximum heart rate three times per week saw no change in the severity of their symptoms over 6 months. Participants who exercised at a lower intensity had a worsening of symptoms.

Parkinson’s Disease causes a loss of function within the motor systems of our bodies. This can cause movements to be smaller, slower, less accurate, and less coordinated. It can also cause a shuffling gait pattern and often, a resting tremor.

These physical challenges are what boxers condition to improve. Boxing conditions individuals for optimal agility, speed, endurance, accuracy, balance, coordination and overall strength – key elements that are necessary to develop in order to fight back against the progression of Parkinsons disease.

Focused research shows that forced, intense exercise can improve Parkinson’s symptoms, thus the Rock Steady Boxing Method was born.

Exercise of any kind is helpful to people with Parkinsons disease because it can help improve everything from balance and mobility to an individuals ability to perform the basic activities of daily living . In fact, according to the Parkinsons Foundation, research shows that getting at least two and a half hours of exercise per week is enough to slow the decline in a persons quality of life. Lets take a closer look at three of the biggest benefits of boxing therapy for Parkinsons.

Program Based On Parkinsons Research

Approximately 1 million people in the U.S. have Parkinsons disease, and about 60,000 people are diagnosed with it every year, according to the Parkinsons Foundation. The risk of the disease increases with age just 4% of people diagnosed are under 50. Men are 1 1/2 more times likely to be diagnosed than women.

A large body of research going as far back as the 1980s supports the idea that vigorous exercise aimed at gross motor movement, balance, core strength and rhythm can help people with Parkinsons maintain their range of motion, flexibility, gait and balance, according to the RSB website.

“We’re all going through this disease together.”

A study published in 2011 and conducted by physical therapy researchers at the University of Indianapolis found that after 12 weeks participating in RSB training, people with Parkinsons experienced improvements in their gait, balance and overall quality of life. It also found that those with milder Parkinsons symptoms improved at a faster rate than those with more severe symptoms.

Other research, including a 2011 review of research by Mayo Clinic neurologist J. Eric Ahlskog, has shown vigorous exercise has a protective effect on the brains of people with Parkinsons disease.

Q: How Did You First Become Involved In Rock Steady Boxing

Rock Steady Boxing Fights Parkinson’s

Dr. Leder: I am a movement disorder specialist and I primarily see patients. During my fellowship I became aware of the positive effects that exercise has on the PD population. During many years in private practice, it became apparent that insurance, including Medicare, does not cover enough physical therapy to actually help a PD patient throughout the year. For years I was trying to determine how to deliver an exercise program to the PD population that would be affordable and accessible to all. I first learned about Rock Steady Boxing from a 60 Minutes segment with Leslie Stahl and I knew right away that it was the program I needed to start in my community.

I became certified as a Rock Steady Boxing expert by taking a three-day course at the Rock Steady Boxing boot camp. When we started the program at NYIT, I personally ran some of the classes. I no longer actually run the classes because I have handpicked fitness professionals who can perform the job better than I can, and I continue to oversee, organize, help and supervise the program. The unique aspect of having the program at the university is that we accept donations and grants and therefore we can offer scholarships to boxers who are unable to pay for the class. No one is turned away for financial reasons.

How Hard Should I Exercise If I Have Parkinsons Disease

A rating of perceived exertion is a good way to measure intensity. On a scale from 0 to 10, 0 would be how you feel while sitting or lying down, while 10 would be the maximum effort you can give. Building up to an effort between 5 to 8 means you are exercising at a high intensity. A good gauge is, if you can have a conversation with someone while exercising, you should probably increase your intensity.

Exercise is thought to help slow down or possibly even reverse the progression of Parkinsons disease by causing neurological changes in your brain.

The MAR-JCC, located in North Miami Beach, FL, currently offers the Quality of Life Senior Wellness Program for seniors through a supervised and monitored comprehensive fitness and exercise program. The TQOL offers seniors with Parkinsons with a daily program specifically tailored to them, developed in conjunction with the Parkinsons Foundation.

Rock Steady Boxing at the MAR-JCC launched in August 2016. The program exceeded anticipation, from an estimate of 40 to the now more than 150 boxers. For the past two years, all new participants have been neurologists referrals. Although these physicians have never seen our facility, they see the improvement in their patients boxers in our program.

Based on that improvement and patient testimonials, anyone newly diagnosed with Parkinsons is prescribed PD medication and referral to our program as a recommended part of their PD treatment. Dr. Leder: All programs are not the same. The instructors and the class format can vary quite a bit. Most often, people will simply go to the one that is closest to where they live, but they might want to trial a class before they sign up to make sure they like the instructor and it feels safe for them.

Dr. Ellis: In my experience, there is a lot of variability in the quality of the classes. In order to become an instructor in the program training is required, which is great, but the variability in instructors still remains. Some instructors come from the world of boxing and fitness others, from the medical world.

It is important for anyone who teaches these classes to have some expertise in PD. Understanding elements of PD such as freezing of gait, postural control deficits, fall risk and on/off periods, that are unique to PD can make the class safe and more effective for people with PD. Invariably, a program overseen by movement disorders specialist like Dr. Leder will be enhanced by her PD expertise.
