Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, patients usually begin developing Parkinson’s symptoms around age 60 and many live between 10 and 20 years after being diagnosed.
Fox Also Shared How Another Parkinson’s Symptom Shapes His Life
In recent years, Fox developed another symptom of Parkinson’s, which he says impacted his decision to step away from acting: he had difficulty memorizing scripts. “I just had this blank, I couldn’t remember the lines,” he recalled of a challenging moment on set of Good Fight, a spinoff of Good Wife.
In his early days of acting, Fox says he could recite pages of dialogue under tremendous studio pressure to get the shot”not a trickle of sweat on my brow,” he recalled. Still, struggling to find the words for a few lines of dialogue came as a shock, but not a cause for panic. “I didn’t freak out. I just went, “Well that’s that. Moving on. A key element of this process is memorizing lines, and I can’t do it,” he said. “So, I go to the beach.”

Michael J. Fox is a passionate advocate for people with Parkinsons disease, but he revealed the only reason he initially went public with his illness is because of the intensity of the bullying he was facing from the paparazzi.
The actor spoke with Entertainment Tonight about the great opportunity his illness presented in terms of educating the public and raising money to find a cure, and how that disclosure almost didnt happen. It was seven or eight years after I had been diagnosed … the paparazzi and stuff, they would stand outside my apartment and heckle at me, like, Whats the matter with you? Fox recounted. I said, I cant be making my neighbors deal with this, so I came out, and it was great. It was a great thing. Fox was first diagnosed with the longterm degenerative nervous system disorder in 1991, but didnt come forward publicly with his illness until 1998. He continued, It was a great surprise to me that people responded the way they responded. They responded with interest, in the desire to find an answer to the disease, and then I saw that as a great opportunity. I didnt get put in this position to squander it.

Michael J Fox is married to actress Tracy Pollan.
They first met whilst they were both cast members on Family Ties, then met again whilst filming Bright Lights, Big City a few years later before they began a relationship. They married on 16th July 1988.

At the moment, all eyes are on a promising surgical therapy involving a specialized brain protein called neurturin, which may slow or stop Parkinson’s symptoms rather than temporarily mask them. In testing, neurturin has been found to help rejuvenate neurons damaged by Parkinson’s, and restore function.
“The attention Michael has brought to Parkinson’s research has sparked a complete revolution,” says the foundation’s chief executive officer, Todd Sherer. “Pharmaceutical companies are more focused than ever on finding treatments quickly, and curing PD is job one for some of the best minds in neuroscience.”

Becoming Michael J Fox
Michael Andrew Fox the “J” came years later he thought it sounded cooler was born in Edmonton, Alberta, on June 9, 1961. His father, Bill, once worked as a jockey and was a sergeant in the Canadian Army his mother, Phyllis, was a payroll clerk.
Mike, as he’s known to friends and family, was the fourth of five children. Fox was too small to live out his dream of becoming a competitive ice hockey player. He turned to acting, and at 16 earned a part in a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation sitcom called Leo and Me, playing a 12-year-old. Two years later, he quit high school and drove to Los Angeles with his dad, where he was cast in the Alex Haley-Norman Lear series Palmerstown, U.S.A. before landing the star-making role of Alex P. Keaton on Family Ties in 1982.
“I negotiated the deal from a phone booth outside of Pioneer Chicken, wishing I had $1.99 for a wing-and-biscuit combo,” Fox remembers.
Family Ties, about the clash of values of liberal, former-hippie parents and their conservative offspring, arrived after America’s cultural consciousness had shifted from Haight-Ashbury to Wall Street, and the show ran for seven seasons. Fox had started to feel subtle symptoms of early-onset Parkinsons in 1991 during the movie Doc Hollywood shooting. Although his first symptoms were tremors in his finger and an aching shoulder, he was informed he might be unable to keep working in the field after some years.

For seven seasons from 1982 to 1989, Fox played Alex P. Keaton on the hit sitcom Family Ties, winning three Emmys for portraying a Republican with liberal parents who were former hippies. In the midst of his television success, he also found silver screen fame in the Back to the Future trilogy as Marty McFly from 1985 to 1990. Off-screen, he married Family Ties costar Tracy Pollan in 1988 and they had their first child in 1989.
Life was looking good, as he kept landing starring movie roles, one after the other. But while he was on the Gainesville, Florida set of Doc Hollywood in 1991, something felt off. He noticed a twitch in his left pinkie finger. A neurologist assured him that he had probably somehow injured his funny bone, as he explained to People.
But six months later, things were worse. His entire left hand was trembling and his shoulder was stiff and achy. He consulted another doctor and was told he had Parkinsons disease, which typically affects patients over the age of 60. He was just 30.
It was incomprehensible, he told People. The doctor said I would be able to function for years and years. But even talking in those terms was strange.

In 1991, there were few bigger names in show business than Michael J. Fox. Millions around the world knew him for his work in the “Back to the Future” films, and the TV series “Family Ties.” But away from the success and celebrity of Hollywood, he was about the begin the biggest fight of his life.
Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease when he was 29 years old. He was newly married to his wife, actress Tracy Pollan, who he met on the set of “Family Ties,” in the 1980s.
“So very early in the marriage she got this dumped on her. And the moment that I told her I was realizing was the last time we cried about it together. We haven’t cried about Parkinson’s since. We’ve just dealt with it and lived our lives. But we cried about it that first time,” Fox recalled to “CBS Mornings” co-host Nate Burleson.
Fox said the couple didn’t know what Parkinson’s meant and were about to enter uncharted territory.
“We didn’t know what to expect. We didn’t know what would happen. We didn’t know. You know, no one could say when it would have more effects. More symptoms than what I had, which was a twitch, twitching pinkie,” said Fox. “But they just said it was coming.”
More than two decades later and after several acting jobs that allowed him to work without hiding his condition, the 60-year-old is now retired from acting.
