Ryan Roach President & Founder

Born into the sport of boxing through his family ties, Ryan Roach founded Punch 4 Parkinsons after seeing firsthand how boxing workouts could reduce symptoms of Parkinsons disease and help those suffering from Parkinsons live a more normal life. Ryan is nephew of hall of fame boxing coach Freddie Roach, who is afflicted with the disease. With a strong philanthropic moral compass, Ryan leveraged his expertise in the field to start up P4P and offer support to the PD community.

Ryan is also a Lieutenant in the Boston Fire Department and a successful professional Boxing Manager at Fighter Locker. Prior to this, Ryan spent 8 active years with the United States Coast Guard and an additional 4 in the reserves. Currently residing in Boston with his wife, 2 children, and 2 dogs he loves spending time with his family and helping the community.

Punch 4 Parkinsons is an organization dedicated to developing immersive, non-combat boxing training and exercise programs for individuals with Parkinsons. Through charitable donations, P4P has sponsored over 400 Parkinsons Warriors and provided them with hands-on training by partnering with carefully vetted boxing training centers sanctioned by USA Boxing, Inc. Impact Update: Checking In With The Parkinson Association Of The Carolinas

The Parkinson Association of the Carolinas has nearly doubled fundraising & is serving 1,500 more individuals.

We were overwhelmed with what to do with technology and how to grow our organization using it, explains Ann Marie Worman, Executive Director of The Parkinson Association of the Carolinas , regarding her decision to reach out to Apparo for help in 2018.

Apparo staff scoped a skilled volunteer engagement to support PAC with a technology assessment and plan. Through Apparos Epic Community Impact Project program, PAC was matched to an individual volunteer, Johann Vaz. An Epic Change Agent, Rhonda Evans, facilitated the project.

We checked in recently with Anne Marie. She shares her story of working with Apparo:

As we began the process, we realized how much we didnt know and how much we had to think about it. Our Change Agent, Rhonda, ensured that we understood every step along the way. The recommendations we received from Johann were all realistic for our organization to take on. I refer to the technology plan frequently, its my 3-5 year roadmap. It improves my planning, as I consider which improvements need to be taken on next. I am much more forward thinking about technology.

We also:

These improvements help enable our growth. Weve added 1,500 new people to our support community this year.

Things You Must Know About Retiring To The Carolinas

From the picturesque beach towns to cozy mountain communities, North Carolina and South Carolina offer retirees plenty of incentives.

I left New York state in early 2013 and landed in northern Virginia to continue my career. Now, with thoughts of retiring within the next few years, I considered the Carolinas as a possible taxes-light retirement destination before recently settling in a new home in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. It’s our future retirement pad. However, increasingly more friends are opting for the Carolinas as they edge near to or into retirement.

Indeed, North Carolina and South Carolina rank high on the list of potential new retirement homes for boomers like me. Both states are in the top five for net migration of people 60 and older, according to the Census Bureau. In 2018, North Carolina was No. 3, behind Florida and Arizona . South Carolina was No. 5, behind Texas .

For this feature, we interviewed retirees who have recently relocated to the Carolinas, as well as real-estate and insurance agents who welcome new retirees to the region every year. Andrew and Lynn Lazar, for instance, sold their longtime home in Hillsborough, N.J., and landed in Latitude Margaritaville Hilton Head, in Hardeeville, S.C., last year. Its an active adult community catering to Parrotheads, the devoted fans of singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett .

What Is Parkinsons Disease

Parkinsons disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects the brain and causes a progression of symptoms including tremors, slowness of movement, limb rigidity, as well as gait and balance problems. The cause remains largely unknown. Although there is no cure, treatment options vary and include medications and surgery. While Parkinsons itself is not fatal, disease complications can be very serious. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention rated complications from PD as the 14th cause of death in the United States.

P4p Motivation & Story

Punch 4 Parkinsons is the brain-child of professional boxing manager Ryan Roach, who was inspired by boxing great Freddie Roach , as well as civil rights activist Jesse Jackson, both who suffer from Parkinsons. Freddie was diagnosed with Parkinsons at the age of 27 and credits the physical nature of his job and the hand-eye coordination of the sport for keeping his symptoms in-check. When Jesse Jackson was diagnosed with Parkinsons in 2017, Freddie, who had been battling the disease for 3 decades by then, reached out to invite Jackson to train with him.

When he got here, he could barely climb the steps to the ring, the elder Roach has said of Jackson. After 10 days of training, he wanted to race me. Both men attribute boxing with offsetting some of the devastating effects of Parkinsons disease.

Why We Call Them Warriors

Parkinson

Parkinsons sufferers, especially those in the advanced stages of the disease, fight every day to complete simple tasks that the rest of us take for granted. They combat debilitating symptoms of this terrible disease with the knowledge that their symptoms are going to get progressively worse over time. Our P4P Warriors have the willpower to get up each day and battle against these symptoms. They get to the gym and fight to regain control of their physicality and mentality. And for this, we call them Warriors.
