Parkinsons Disease And Movement Disorders Centerdepartment Of Neurology At University Hospital Wrzburg

Meet Neurosurgeon Dr. Alon Mogilner

More than 2,000 patients with movement disorders are treated annually in the inpatient and outpatient services at the Parkinsons Disease and Movement Disorders Center in the Department of Neurology at University Hospital Würzburg. Diverse studies aim to improve the therapeutic potentials in the treatment of movement disorders and allow a careful management of individual patients. In particular, we helped to establish deep brain stimulation as one of the most potent therapies for patients with movement disorders. Our laboratories use a wide range of clinical and experimental techniques to study the dysregulation of motor circuits underlying human movement disorders, such as parkinsonism, dystonia, myoclonus, and tremor. These involve molecular brain imaging studies with simultaneous deep brain and cortical recordings and biomechanical measurements. We aim to better understand the neuronal encoding mechanisms of motor control toward new and personalized treatments.

The symptoms at first were hardly noticeable, which is how it can be with Parkinsons. But soon it became obvious that Marlene Fresco had a form of the neurological disease.

Her husband, Paolo Fresco, the former head of Fiat, talked to his friend Ken Langone, the chairman and benefactor of the NYU Langone Medical Center, who recommended a doctor there.

Dr. Alessandro Di Rocco provided excellent care, said Fresco, who began thinking of ways to show his gratitude.

Today, NYU Langone Medical Center will announce a $25 million grant from the Paolo and Marlene Fresco Foundation, one meant not only to repay the debt he felt toward the institution, but also one he felt toward Italy, his native country, and to the United States, his adopted home.

More practically, Fresco said, the money could do some real good for the more than four million people suffering from the disease.

Ive been receiving encouragement from various sources that this is an area where a donor can make a dent, make a difference, he said.

The donation will create opportunities for early-career scientists and researchers in Italy through a fellowship program. Some of those fellows will train at NYU Langone for two to three years.

One of the goals of Frescos gift, in addition to the research, is to eventually establish a new medical, research and educational center in Italy that coordinates efforts to care for Parkinsons patients.

“By the middle of next year or this time next year, it will be clear to people even outside the movement disorder community that this is a powerhouse center.”& mdash Steven J. Frucht, MD

In 2015, Paolo Fresco, the former head of Fiat, donated $25 million to New York University Langone Medical Centernow NYU Langone Healthin New York City for a particular purpose. He aimed to create a way to help people with debilitating movement disorders after his wife, Marlene, received care there for a neurological conditionParkinson disease .

Now, just over 2 years later, the Marlene and Paolo Fresco Institute for Parkinsons and Movement Disorders is setting itself up as a leader in the space and provides care for almost 5000 patients per year. The institute recently brought on 2 renowned physiciansAndrew S. Feigin, MD, and Steven J. Frucht, MDas coexecutive directors to lead the center.

    Steven J. Frucht, MD

I think we both realized that this was a unique opportunity, Frucht told MD Magazine®. It was sort of a decision on the part of the institute and the leadership here to really make a sea change and move things to another level. We were both pleasantly surprised and decided this was a unique opportunity.

Although that connection differentiates the institute, one of its major strengths lies in its multidisciplinary approach to treatment that concentrates on practical issues faced by patients with PD, according to Frucht and Feigin.

Thinking Changes in Parkinson’s Disease: Engaging the Nurse

In November 2018, the Fresco Institute hosted a three and a halfday course focusing on synaptic plasticity, Parkinsons disease, and neuropsychiatric disorders. In the first two and a halfday workshop, held in Florence, Italy, international experts provided an overview of the scientific advances on different aspects of brain plasticity from bench to bedside.

The sessions explored a possible role of art and music in rehabilitation of neurodegenerative diseases the relation between genetics, epigenetics, and plasticity, as well as the relation between immunity, inflammation process, and plasticity novel measures of functional and structural connectivity and the role of plasticity in the genesis and treatment of psychiatric symptoms.

On the closing day, NYU Langone faculty from the Fresco Institute and a panel of international experts, including the leaders in the Fresco Parkinson Center in Europe, presented didactic lectures, providing an extensive overview of advances in diagnosis and treatment of Parkinsons disease and related disorders. Participants gained a deeper understanding of plasticity and its relevance to the genesis, diagnosis, and treatment of Parkinsons disease and other neurodegenerative disorders.
