In my career I worked as a police officer in the drugs squad, where springer spaniels were used as sniffer dogs. I’ve always been a fan of their lively nature. When I retired in 2013 I found myself getting bored and needing some company during the day, so we looked into getting a spaniel, and found a local breeder. Out of a litter of 8, a small bundle of energy greeted us, and we knew from that moment that we’d been chosen as this particular puppy’s owners.
Without him, I think I would slip into staying indoors too much and dwelling on things.
Barney was like a small hurricane. He chewed his way through cables, shoes, clothes you name it, it got eaten.
It was usually quite funny, if not slightly frustrating and worrying. He was so bouncy and energetic that we decided to take him to puppy training classes, which were absolutely brilliant. Not only did it teach him lots but we learned so much about dog psychology ourselves. We left feeling like fully fledged and very proud dog owners. Barney is a joy to have as part of the family.
It keeps me motivated to get up in the morning and stay active. Without him, I think I would slip into staying indoors too much and dwelling on things. I had a serious bout of depression last year, and spent a lot of time at home. Barney lifts my mood and forces me to keep my day structured.
How Do Vets Diagnose Parkinson’s In Dogs
Your vet will begin by taking a thorough history of your dog’s health and current symptoms, then do a full physical examination. Blood tests or urinalysis may be done in order to rule out other conditions that could be causing your dog’s symptoms.

Many Causes For Dog’s Shaky Legs
My 4 year old German Shepherds back legs shake. I notice this when we go on walks and he stops to smell something, play in the yard, and even when hes drinking from his water bowl. He runs and plays and has no trouble jumping on the couch or bed. My vet recommended just keeping an eye on it. I just want to ensure that I shouldnt be doing something else. Can dogs get Parkinsons disease?
The shaking you see is due to the muscles in his legs contracting, which needs to happen in a normal fashion so your dog can walk and run. The reason for the unintentional muscle contraction can often be difficult to determine. Older German Shepherds commonly develop a disease called degenerative myelopathy, which is a slowly worsening weakness of the hind legs. This is caused by a slow degeneration or die back, of the nerves in the spinal cord. The lack of nerve signals to the muscles of the hind legs can be seen as knuckling of the hind feet or shaking because of the weak muscle contractions. A veterinary neurologist or surgeon can often diagnose this by excluding other causes.
Pain can also cause shaking of leg muscles. Knee or hip pain can manifest as tremors in the hind legs. After examination, a veterinary orthopedic surgeon will be able to tell if joint disease is causing the problem in your dog and tell you what to do about it. Commonly, ligament damage in the knees or arthritis in the hips will cause pain induced shaking of the hind legs.

Currently, researchers with the comparative neurology program are investigating several diseases that can affect dogs and humans. These diseases include:
- Epilepsy – a common disease characterized by repetitive seizures. It has many different causes, but it is thought to be a hereditary condition in many dogs.
- Parkinson’s disease – caused by a loss of a neurotransmitter, dopamine, in nerve cells. Symptoms include tremors, stiff muscles or movement, and difficulty with balancing and walking.

Should You Put Your Dog Down If Their Parkinsons Is Bad
I cannot answer that question for you. Your decision to euthanize a dog with Parkinsons disease is highly personal. If your dogs quality of life is truly poor, with no independence at all, the kinder thing may be to put them down.
Its a decision we never want to make, but sometimes it really is the best thing for them.
Consult your veterinarian for advice on how long your dog can expect to remain mobile and when euthanasia may be the sole solution.

What Is Shaker Syndrome In Dogs

Researchers At The School Of Veterinary Medicine Led By Jorge Ivn Alvarez And Molly Church Found That The Canine Disease Granulomatous Meningoencephalomyelitis Shares Many Of The Same Pathological And Immunological Features As Multiple Sclerosis
The canine disease granulomatous meningoencephalomyelitis , the most common neuroinflammatory disease that affects dogs, shares key features of its pathology and immunology with multiple sclerosis , according to a new study.
A detailed investigation of GME by a team led by Molly Church and Jorge Iván Alvarez of Penns School of Veterinary Medicine, incorporating MRI images and studies of brain tissue, found that defining characteristics of MSnotably the accumulation of B cells in the tissues that line the central nervous systemwere also present in dogs with GME. B cells are a type of white blood cell involved in immune responses. In healthy people, such immune cells are present in very low numbers in the membranes that line the spine and brain, known as the meninges. The team reported its findings in the Journal of Immunology.
Thats a novel aspect of the disease in dogs that is mirroring the pathology in humans, says Alvarez. And its something that people are not able to replicate in mouse models of MS. We feel that by studying dogs with GME, we can expand knowledge of a human disease and contribute to the pressing need to understand the disease in dogs as well.
Similarly, GME is a disease that has only been characterized in the past few decades and is generally diagnosed by exclusion of other diseases. While some dogs respond well to immunosuppressive treatment, others briefly stabilize clinically, and still others decline rapidly following diagnosis.

How Similar Is Canine Parkinsons Disease To The Human Condition
Parkinsons disease in dogs is very similar to how it affects humans.
Firstly, both unpredictably affect your movement. Both dogs and humans with this disease can expect to have sudden moments of stiffness. This could be any limb but also the face.
Equally, both can expect surprise tremors and shakes. This is often one of the first things owners notice in their dogs a Parkinson like tremor in dogs or the dog shaking his head like Parkinsons

However, it is important to recognize the different ways Parkinsons presents in dogs and humans.
A huge reason why Parkinsons disease is difficult to spot in dogs in the early stages is because they dont speak. Their faces also dont express the same ways that ours do.
The first signs of Parkinsons in humans are mostly not being able to move the face in the same way or slurred speech.
Unless you have a real-life Scooby-Doo in your life that is linguistically gifted, its most likely you wont spot the signs of Parkinsons in your dog until their limbs are affected with those Parkinsons tremors I mentioned a moment ago.
Another critical difference is with the age groups that Parkinsons most affects. As I said in the intro, it is usually the over 50s that are affected by this pervasive disease in the human world.
