Is Turmeric Good For Parkinson’s Disease

Why On Earth Is The Substantia Nigra Losing Those Dopamine

I was shocked to discover that we already know why were losing those priceless, life-giving substantia nigra cells.

Yet still do almost nothing about it

And now I know why we dont

There are 8 main factors leading to Parkinsons. Some have a small effect. A couple are huge.

Together theyre essential in beating this horrible condition.

In truth, some of them my health-care center already acted on.

For example, they prescribed dopamine-enhancing drugs. For sure, I needed more dopamine.

I had tests and underwent occupational therapy. Again, good stuff it helped me manage my problems with balance, movement, stiffness.

But I also realized they were not helping me to avoid the worst symptoms of this disease. At best, they were just delaying it.

Yet thats what I wanted most to not end up with my own personal Parkinsons horror story.

Which is why I went headlong into my own research about my illness and, eventually, found my way out.

Im not a medical rebel!

Now I should point out here that I am not the kind of person who second-guesses his doctor!

I trust professionals and experts. They studied for years. They do the research.

But their most effective meds came with unpleasant side-effects.

And those meds would become less effective as time wore on.

And as they failed my health would fail even more.

They would work for a while and then theyd start failing.

What kind of future is that?

I wanted better than this!

That shaking of the hands was very real.

Sleep problems.

Evaluation Of Sleep Hygiene Program: Sleep Diary

Monitoring the effectiveness of behavior changes is best done by keeping a diary.  The table below depicts a sample diary that could be kept by the bedside and filled out upon arising by the patient or caregiver.  If daytime sleepiness and napping are problems, items can be added to record the number, time, and duration of napping episode. The diary can be carried with the patient.

An Approach To The Treatment Of Parkinsons Disease

No treatment can arrest or slow neurodegeneration in Parkinsons disease. The aim is to relieve symptoms and avoid the complications of therapy.

Early Parkinsons disease

Many studies have shown that early treatment with dopamine agonists reduces the incidence of dyskinesia.Fewer motor fluctuations were shown in some but not all of the studies. We recommend a dopamine agonist as the first treatment in younger patients who have mild disease and no cognitive deficit. It is necessary to add levodopa within 1-5 years in most patients. In more severe disease, treatment begins with levodopa but a dopamine agonist may be added to keep the daily dose of levodopa in the lower range if there is no cognitive deficit. Dopamine agonists are used infrequently and with caution in patients more than 70 years old because of the risk of neuropsychiatric adverse effects and postural hypotension. They are contraindicated in the presence of dementia.

Isolated resting tremor is rarely disabling, but if it interferes with function it can usually be managed with levodopa. When this is ineffective at low to moderate doses, the addition of an anticholinergic can sometimes be useful.

Healthy Eating With Pd

Eating a whole food, plant-based diet, often called a Mediterranean diet, can help you live well with PD. Eat what you need to eat to be happy but also eat more of the food that is good for your health.

If you have Parkinsons, every healthy lifestyle change can help. Choosing to eat well also leads to a feeling of empowerment that helps you in your daily life with PD. While it can be challenging to eat better, most people make minor diet changes gradually that become major changes over time. Always consult your physician before making major changes.

Dietary Fibre For Constipation In Parkinsons Disease

Curcumin is the Solution for Parkinson

Be guided by your doctor, but general suggestions include:

  • Choose easy-to-eat fibrous foods such as soft fruits. Consider mashing or pureeing fruits to make them easier to eat. Make sure to include the skin, where most of the fibre is found.
  • Eat at least two pieces of fruit and five serves of vegetables every day.
  • Eat homemade vegetable soups.
  • Sprinkle a tablespoon of bran, psyllium husks or chia seeds on your breakfast cereal or add the bran to baked products such as cakes. However, avoid bran if you have swallowing problems.
  • Fibre supplements may be helpful, but you must drink enough fluids for these to work properly. Avoid fibre supplements if you have problems swallowing.
  • Dont increase dietary fibre too quickly or youll risk bloating and abdominal cramps. If discomfort occurs, cut back your fibre intake, increase your fluid intake, apply a hot water bottle to your abdomen and see your doctor.

It Prevents The Formation Of Lewy Bodies

Alpha-synuclein is a protein found in brain cells. In Parkinsons disease, these proteins undergo changes in structure which cause cell death in brain cells.

It forms protein aggregates called Lewy bodies.

Curcumin is to inhibit such activity by inhibiting oxidative stress-imbalance between prooxidants and antioxidants. Curcumin overproduction of alpha-synuclein and its mutations.

Curcumin inhibits the formation of alpha-synuclein fibrils which give rise to Lewy bodies. Curcumin and its analogue of Lewy bodies.

Macroautophagy is a process that degrades that proteins in cells and this process is impaired in Parkinsons disease due to an accumulation of protein-alpha synuclein.

Curcumin the accumulation of alpha-synuclein by recovering the macroautophagy process.

at Oregon Health and Science Institute have found that curcumin treatment prevents motor function impairment occurring as a result of alpha-synuclein accumulation.

Curcumin the level of transcription factor EB, a protein that regulates autophagy and in turn reduces neurotoxicity.

Autophagy degrades the accumulation of protein alpha-synuclein.

Curcumin has the to cross the blood-brain barrier and inhibit alpha-synuclein accumulation and toxicity in Parkinsons.

Vitamin B12 And Folate Deficiency

Some people who take levodopa may have lower levels of vitamin B12 and vitamin B9 . Symptoms of vitamin B12 and folate deficiency can include pins and needles , a sore, red tongue, mouth ulcers and disturbed vision.

If youre worried about any symptoms youre experiencing, you should speak to your specialist or Parkinsons nurse.

Eating a well-balanced diet will give you a good amount of vitamins and minerals.

For many vitamin and mineral supplements, theres no clear scientific evidence they have any health benefits .

So, if you feel you need more of a particular vitamin or mineral, it is advisable to try to eat more of the foods containing it, rather than to buy expensive vitamin and mineral supplements.

You also need to be aware that some vitamins, when taken in large doses, can have side effects.

Some supplements, for example vitamin B6 and iron supplements, may also affect the absorption of your Parkinsons medication.

Before purchasing any over the counter mineral and vitamin supplements from chemists or health food shops, consult your GP, specialist, Parkinsons nurse or registered dietitian for advice.

Mayo Clinic Q And A: Turmerics Anti

DEAR MAYO CLINIC: My friend says that her arthritis pain improved after she started taking turmeric. Can you tell me more about this supplement?

ANSWER: Although turmeric is a common spice in many home pantries, many people are not familiar with its purported health effects. Relieving pain is one of many such purported health effects.

Turmeric, a plant related to ginger, is grown in many Asian countries, as well as other tropical areas. Its a major ingredient in curry powders common in many Indian and Asian dishes and is used as a coloring for foods, fabrics and cosmetics. The underground portions of the plant can be dried and made into capsules, tablets, extracts, powders or teas. Or they may be made into a paste to apply to the skin.

Turmerics main active component curcumin is what gives the spice its yellow color. Curcumin has anti-inflammatory properties, making it a potential treatment for a number of health conditions, including reduced pain and increased ease of movement in people with . One study found that taking turmeric extract three times daily was comparable to taking a 1,200-milligram dose of ibuprofen daily. However, more research is necessary to confirm these effects.

    Home Remedyfor Parkinsons #5 Vitamin D & Vitamin E:

Inflammation and low immunity are two powerful factorsthat contribute to the development and worsening of Parkinsons disease. Bothvitamin D and vitamin E are strong anti-inflammatories and immune boosters. VitaminD & E also protect our brain cells and can even help damaged neurons regenerate. A deficiency of these key vitamins has also been linked to brain difficultiessuch as poor memory and recall attainability.

In regards to PD, a study of 157 Parkinsons patientsfound that the vast majority of them had severe to chronic vitamin Ddeficiencies. The findings, published in the Archives of Neurology in March of 2011, revealed a strong linkbetween inadequate levels of vitamin D and the onset of early Parkinson’sdisease.

Back in 2002, another study was published in the Archives of Neurology which tracked themental decline of 3,000 men and women diagnosed with Parkinsons disease over a period of 7 years. The study found the participants whose supplemental vitamin E intakewas higher experienced a 36% reduction in theseverity of their symptoms compared to the rest of the group. Another study, whichappeared in the Lancet Neurology onlinemagazine in 2005, showed that vitamin E may actually prevent Parkinsonsdisease from developing in the first place!

Foods That Are Hard To Chew

Many people with Parkinsons have difficulty with chewing and swallowing foods. A person needs medical help if this is the case. A speech and language therapist may be able to help a person overcome this issue.

However, if a person is finding certain foods hard to chew and swallow, they may wish to avoid these foods.

    Such foods include:

    • dry, crumbly foods
    • tough or chewy meats

If a person does wish to eat chewy meats, they could try using gravy or sauce to soften them and make eating easier.

They could also try chopping meat into smaller pieces or incorporating meat into casseroles, which can make it more tender.

Having a drink with a meal can also make chewing and swallowing easier.

What Is The Best Diet For Parkinsons Disease

It is recommended that people with Parkinsons disease drink plenty of water throughout the day.

The best diet for Parkinsons disease is similar to the best diet for most people, which includes eating lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, preferring fish and dairy protein to meat, and eating whole grain foods. No specific diet has consistently been recommended for those with Parkinsons disease. That said, people with Parkinsons disease may benefit from some dietary changes.

Stem cell research has shown promise for treating Parkinsons disease.

Parkinsons disease is caused by increasing damage to the brains cells that produce . Dopamine is a chemical messenger that is necessary for making smooth, controlled movements, among other things. The decrease in dopamine results the most familiar symptoms of Parkinsons disease, including tremors and a shuffling gait. The dopamine deficit at the root of Parkinsons disease cannot be treated by diet alone. Eating healthy foods, though, along with beneficial fats from nuts and legumes, will supply adequate nutrition.

Individuals suffering from Parkinsons disease may experience an impaired ability to walk. Fatty fish like sardines are good for people with Parkinsons. Parkinsons disease is caused by increasing damage to the brains cells that produce dopamine. Salmon is a good source of Vitamin D.

What Are The Symptoms Of Parkinsons Disease

Symptoms of Parkinsons disease and the rate of decline vary widely from person to person. The most common symptoms include:

    Other symptoms include:

    • Decreased facial expressions: You may not smile or blink as often as the disease worsens; your face lacks expression.
    • Speech/vocal changes: Speech may be quick, become slurred or be soft in tone. You may hesitate before speaking. The pitch of your voice may become unchanged .
    • Handwriting changes: You handwriting may become smaller and more difficult to read.
    • Depression and anxiety.
    • including disrupted sleep, acting out your dreams, and restless leg syndrome.

Curcumin Derivatives Have Potent Therapeutic Action In Parkinsons

    Curcumin For Parkinson

derivatives of curcumin have been developed which show enhanced neuroprotective activity than curcumin in case of Parkinsons.

CNB-001, a from curcumin shows therapeutic value in Parkinsons by :

    • Protecting dopaminergic neurons in the brain
    • Reducing oxidative stress and protecting mitochondrial function
    • Attenuating impairments in movement
    • Suppressing neuroinflammation

Liposomal curcumin is proven to improve motor function, prevent apoptosis in neurons and stimulate dopaminergic neurons as a means to ameliorate symptoms to Parkinsons disease.

Curcumin glucoside, a derivative of curcumin, clumping and aggregation of -synuclein.

Curcumin and its metabolite, tetrahydrocurcumin also offers neuroprotection and brain damage.

What does this mean?Various compounds are being developed from curcumin which are more potent than curcumin itself in treating symptoms of Parkinsons and have the potential of being developed into clinical drugs.

Curcumin Helps Balance Brain Chemicals & Protect Brain Cells

Curcumin promotes the heat shock response and stimulates the vitagenes and . In turn this increases production of the body’s own antioxidants and helps defend the brain from free radical damage.

Some scientists caution that too much HO-1 can lead to iron deposits in the cells damaged in Parkinson’s disease. However, animal studies show that curcumin only induces protective amounts of it. Whole turmeric also contains , vitamin C, and all of which can help regulate HO-1 production. Lab studies indicate that curcumin also increases levels of the body’s own potent natural antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase .

Exercise Helps Prevent Fight Parkinsons Disease From The Harvard Health Letter

Parkinsons is a brain disease that affects the body and how it moves. Early symptoms include tremors, a shuffling gait, and an overall slowing of physical movement. Yet exercise may be one of the best and most underutilized ways of combating the condition, according to the March 2012 .

Several prospective studies that followed tens of thousands of people for many years have shown a correlation between exercise earlier in life and a reduced chance of developing Parkinsons later on. Exercising in your 30s and 40s decades before Parkinsons typically occurs may reduce the risk of getting Parkinsons disease by about 30%, notes the Health Letter. Some experts believe the exercise must be vigorous to make a difference. However, because this kind of research cant prove cause and effect, there is the possibility of reverse causation: that is, exercise may not prevent Parkinsons disease, but instead a very early preclinical form of the disease, without clear symptoms, may make people less willing or able to exercise in the first place.

Exploring Curcumin And Curcumin Derivatives As Putative Epigenetic Target Of Histone Deacetylase Inhibition In Parkinson Disease

Objective/Rationale:Our project is to explore cutting-edge nano- biotechnology advances in formulating curcumin extracted from Curry as potential drug candidates in treatment of Parkinson disease. Previous studies in neural tissue culture and animal models of PD suggested Curcumin may be a safe neuroprotectant drug targeting gene-environment interaction and prevent or slow progression of PD. By measuring the amount of curcumin transferred from the blood to nerve cells in the brain following intravenous injection, we can determine optimal dosages for each of the three formulations.

Project Description:Our protocol consists of intravenous administering each of the three Curc formulations in 3 dosages to C57BL6/J mice along with vehicle control. Blood samples are taken at 1 hr, 2 hr and 4 hr after injection for measuring curcumin. Following blood sampling, the mice are sacrificed and brain regions relevant to PD are dissected out for measuring curcumin levels. By pairing blood and brain curcumin levels we will determine the brain uptake and the intravenous dosage required to achieve the brain curcumin level effective against Parkinsons disease.

    Naturalremedy For Parkinsons #7 Omega

Animal based omega-3 fatty acids are a powerful weapon inthe fight against Parkinsons disease. One of the main fatty acids, DHA, is oneof the essential building blocks for the human brain. Half of your brain andeyes are made up of fat and a large proportion of this is DHA fat.

Omega-3 fatty acids have the unique ability to cross theblood-brain barrier, something most conventional drugs cannot do. They helpincrease dopamine levels and reduce neuroinflammation in the brain, while atthe same time, stimulating neuron growth. So basically, EPA and DHA help preventbrain cell damage and keep the nervous system in tip top working order!

Best sources of animal based omega-3s are either fishoil, cod liver oil or krill oil. High strength krill oil is the preferred option as thiscontains a substance called Astaxanthin. Astaxanthin is a potent brain food nutrientthat has been shown to prevent neurodegeneration and inflammation of the brain. For dosages, take AT LEAST the highest recommended amount listed on the bottle the same goes with fish oil or cod liver oil. You cant overdose on thesesupplements so theres nothing to be concerned about. In fact, the more omega-3syou can get into you the better the results!

In addition to this, try and eat some cold water fattyfish such as salmon, tuna, mackerel, sardines or herring 3-4 times a week foran extra supply of DHA and EPA.
