Depression And Anxiety May Lower Treatment Response In Acid Reflux

Can anxiety cause acid reflux symptoms?

The occurrence of mental health-related symptoms such as depression and anxiety may lower treatment response to medications prescribed for acid reflux .

Vakil et al. have observed gender differences in treatment response. Anxiety and depression may be more prevalent in female GERD patients and this may worsen their acid reflux symptoms in comparison to male GERD patients.

GERD patients who have undergone surgery to treat acid reflux also tend to experience depression and anxiety and express less treatment satisfaction.

They show a lower tolerance to stress, frustration, fear and worry.

Interestingly, Boltin and colleagues observed that depression and anxiety do not affect treatment response in GERD. But low life satisfaction was associated with poor treatment response.

Limited treatment response to acid reflux medications like proton pump inhibitors may also increase the risk of developing mental health symptoms.

Partial responders have higher depression and anxiety scores as well as more sleep issues than GERD patients who respond to proton pump inhibitor treatment.

Pineapple Banana Acid Reflux Smoothie

This is one of the best smoothies you can prepare to get more benefits.

Although pineapple is an acidic fruit, it is renowned for its anti-inflammatory properties.

There are many studies that proved this important effect: long-term dietary supplementation with fresh or unpasteurized frozen;pineapple juice is not only safe but also decreases inflammation severity in the intestinal tract.

In addition, pineapple is rich in fiber: with more details, such fibers have been proven effective in reducing the toxic compounds excreted by intestinal microflora.

Pineapple also contains vitamin C, another reason to consider it good for people who are suffering from reflux and related symptoms.

The preparation of this pineapple banana smoothie is very easy. You only need the following ingredients:

  • 1.5 Cups Diced Pineapple
  • 1/2 cup of Greek Yogurt
  • 1 Cup Pineapple Juice or Water
  • 1/2 Cup of Ice

Once you have all the ingredients, just mix well until you achieve a nice, smooth consistency.

Then pour into a glass and youre ready to drink it.

As you can see, the presence of Greek yogurt is another asset: this is, in fact, the likely best yogurt type you can eat for relieving acid reflux symptoms, starting from heartburn.

Drinking Scotch Every Day Can Help Your Body Battle Inflammation

A study;published in the;European Journal of Clinical Nutrition;found that 12-year-old, cask-aged;Scotch whisky was able to raise a person’s level of antioxidants even more so than red wine, as reported by BBC News.;Antioxidants are important for several reasons, but are especially useful for fighting inflammation, Shawn Talbott, an expert in nutrition and dietetics, revealed to . Although antioxidants aren’t just found in wine and scotch, the latter is especially rich in antioxidants.;”In an Australian study done at Monash University, whiskey had so much antioxidant activity that it surpassed what you’d get from the ascorbic acid available in a glass of regular orange juice,” reported the;Health & Wealth Bulletin.

However, the kind of whiskey you choose matters. Based on the study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition,;BBC News reported;there was “a marked fall in antioxidant capacity” in participants after they consumed newly-distilled whisky as opposed to aged scotch, possibly due to the amount of copper in non-matured whisky.;

Note That There Are Serious Risks Associated With Taking Ppis For Heartburn

The Government of Canada also warns that there is a possible association between the use of;proton pump inhibitors and an increased risk of;Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea.

US Pharmacist states quotes a study byLambert AA, Lam JO, Paik JJ, et al. that found that outpatient PPI use is associated with a 1.5-fold increased risk of community-acquired pneumonia, with the highest risk within the first 30 days after initiation of therapy.;PPI therapy also increases risk for hospitalization for community-acquired pneumonia.

In addition to the above, there is evidence that PPIs can actually cause rebound symptoms. And that there can be a clinically meaningful increase in acid production, above pre-treatment levels, when treatment is stopped.

Be sure to discuss these issue with your doctor if he or she prescribes a PPI. And be sure to be checked regularly for these negative effects if you do need to stay on PPIs.

Do Bananas Help Heartburn

Treatment of Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) with ...

All the affected people should consider eating bananas for heartburn.

This is valid not only for general cases of acid reflux, or occasional heartburn.

Also, people who are dealing with LPR can experience great benefits from special diets that include bananas.

It has been noted that even the most recalcitrant cases of LPR can be effectively treated with the administration of a low-acid diet.

Bananas are part of this dieting program, and their action is on the occurrence of symptoms

Bananas also protect the esophageal mucosa from the acidic aggression of refluxate .

This fruit has double beneficial action for people who suffer from reflux, and this makes it one of the top choices to make.

Can Acid Reflux Cause Dizziness

Dizziness and acid reflux are rarely associated with each other. However, personal accounts show that acid reflux, specifically GERD can also lead to dizziness in patients. This dizziness is often characterized as lightheadedness, weakness, and a temporarily blurry vision.;

Dizziness and Acid Reflux: Is There a Link?

While dizziness is not often listed as a common symptom of acid reflux, a study suggests that there is a link between peripheral vertigo and acid reflux.;

Scientists suggest that patients who experience dizziness alongside their acid reflux may be due to gastric acids irritating the ear, which could lead to ear infections.;

The study reported that 77.6% of patients with peripheral vertigo were also diagnosed with acid reflux compared to 26% of patients without reflux symptoms.;

Although further studies are required to finalize the findings, the researchers suggest that reflux contents such as Hydrochloric acid and pepsin could get into the middle ear through the Eustachian tube and affect the ear directly. This can cause tinnitus or a perceived ringing of the ears.;

Another way acid reflux could cause dizziness is through bacterial infection. The bacteria Helicobacter pylori can travel further up the esophagus through reflux contents and reach the upper respiratory tract. This could cause scarred ear drum , leading to dizziness.;

Are Bananas Good For Acid Reflux

Bananas have an important action when it comes to acid reflux.

Even better, the same action prevents the occurrence of some seriously dangerous complications of reflux, such as developing a real GERD.

Or, even worse, the fearsome Barretts esophagus.

This is possible because bananas coat the mucosa, meaning that even in the occurrence of reflux, the esophagus is protected from acidic aggressions.

In the long run, such acidic aggressions cause changes and degeneration of the esophageal mucosa.

However, the presence of a protective layer due to the properties of bananas makes the process much less dangerous.

In other words, eating bananas is an effective protection against the progression of this disease, as well as its complications.

To make things better, theres another important reason to consider, that adds benefits to what we have just analyzed.

Anticholinergic Medications Slow Digestion

Anticholinergic medications block parasympathetic nerve impulses. Parasympathetic nerve impulses are the part of the autonomic nervous system that unconsciously regulates muscle movement in the heart, lungs, stomach, intestines, urinary tract, and more.

Anticholinergics slow bowel movement by decreasing mucus secretion as well as decreasing involuntary muscle movements in the stomach and intestines. When the digestive process is prolonged, the risk of experiencing acid reflux symptoms increases.

How does a prolonged digestive process increase the risk of heartburn?

  • Slow digestion leads to constipation. This extra volume in the intestinal tract creates abdominal pressure adding pressure on the stomach and the lower esophageal sphincter above it. This added pressure causes the LES closure to weaken allowing acid to reflux into the esophagus.
  • Slow digestion causes acid to build up in the stomach.

    Some Medications Can Worsen Your Heartburn

    According to the Mayo Clinic, asthma, which I learned six years ago that I have, often occurs together with acid reflux. Whod have thought? In fact, each can worsen the other!

    If you have this uncomfortable combo, ask your doctor to confirm that your asthma medication isnt making your acid reflux worse.

    Canada Drug Guide, which is funded by Health Canada lists the following medications as possible contributors to acid reflux:

    • Anti-anxiety medications
    • Pain medications such as ibuprofen
    • Products with iron content
    • Antibiotics called tetracyclines.

    Talk to your your doctor about your acid reflux and how to manage your discomfort while still using the meds you need.

    Acid reflux and heartburn: common causes and treatment

    When it comes to eating bananas for heartburn, and, more in general, for reflux-related problems, the first important step to take is to look for the right base.

    In fact, there are so many good banana smoothies that have an acidic base, made of orange juice, for instance.

    In all these cases, the smoothie is not going to work for heartburn, just because of the acid in the base of that drink.

    Thats why, one more time, you want to pay the greatest attention to how youre going to combine bananas for heartburn.

    Having the right base for your banana smoothie is critical, and some suggestions are:

    • almond milk
    • soy milk
    • water

    The first one is likely the best option to make a good alkaline base of a banana smoothie that is good for reflux. It is highly alkaline and it also presents fibers, along with vitamins and minerals.

    Managing Heartburn And Reflux

    Managing heartburn and reflux

    People living with Parkinsons can experience heartburn or oesphageal reflux and; hiatus hernia and ulcers may also be problematic.

    Parkinsons medications can cause heartburn and it is a common problem with ageing.; Heartburn is an annoying and painful burning sensation.

    Oesophageal reflux is a condition in which the valve closing off the stomach from the oesophagus fails to close properly allowing stomach acid contents to flow upwards towards the throat causing the painful burning sensation.

    Stomach acids are very strong and can damage and scar the valve or oesphageal sphincter as well as the base of the throat.; The condition is called oesphagitis and can make it increasingly difficult to swallow or to keep the valve closed.

    Acid reflux can also be accidently inhaled into the lungs causing aspiration pneumonia, which is a very dangerous, sometimes fatal condition needing expert management.

    Not all foods affect people in the same way and so some investigative work may need to be undertaken to decide which foods are problematic.; Taking an accurate record of foods eaten prior to the attack is recommended.

    Some foods known to be problematic are tomatoes, citrus juices, pepper, decaffeinated coffee, chocolate, caffeine, peppermint, spearmint, garlic, onion, carbonated drinks, and alcohol.

    Keeping a list of foods eaten, timing of medications, time of meals, amount eaten may assist in identifying the issues.

    How To Fix Low Stomach Acid Acid Reflux: A True Story

    The truth is that reduced stomach acid has nothing to do with acid reflux. The real culprit behind heartburn and GERD is a leaky valve, which lets acid enter the esophagus. Basically, the door between the esophagus and the stomach the esophageal valve cannot shut properly and stomach juices are able to sneak in. Common causes of this include:

    Exactly What Is Heartburn And Why Do So Many Seniors Get It

    What Are The Symptoms of Parkinson

    Once you have acid reflux, youll recognize it forever. A burning sensation in the chest or throat. Even the taste of stomach acid in your mouth.

    According to the Cleveland Clinic, what we know as heartburn occurs when the sphincter between the stomach and the esophagus doesnt close properly and allows stomach acid to flow into the esophagus.

    Sometimes it can feel like a dull pain in the chest and that raises the issue of heart attack.

    How do I know it isnt a heart attack?

    The fact is, says the Mayo Clinic, its often difficult to distinguish between acid reflux and a heart attack even in a hospital emergency room.

    If you experience dull pain in the chest and sweating, shortness of breath or arm pain, call 911 and get to a hospital ASAP. Then do the necessary follow-ups with your physician, even if the emergency room doctor and hospital lab test are negative on a heart attack.
