How Was The Spark Developed

Parkinsons Awareness Day Event

The Spark was designed in partnership with Franklyn , a creative studio based in Brooklyn, New York. The six-month effort was comprehensive and engaged a global community of organisations, people with Parkinsons and advocates. This was a tall task, as whatever symbol we crafted for the global Parkinsons community had to be simple, urgent, and tied to the condition itself. Creating a logo that is also customisable and truly open-source which means anyone can download it, draw it, draw on it and use it to tell their own stories is also what makes it powerful, personal and deeply emotional, said Michael Freimuth, Franklyn Co-Founder.

Hold A Fundraiser For World Parkinsons Day

What can you do to help out on this important day? As mentioned above there are numerous marathons and walk-a-thons that take place in various cities to help generate donations to support the ongoing research into this condition. This would be a great time to work together with various friends, family or coworkers to help organize refreshment stands or bake sales to produce more funds that can be donated to Parkinsons Disease research groups.

It also might be a great idea to organize larger events at some local parks, or even with some local schools since getting children involved and aware is a great idea! This would be an ideal opportunity to work together with teachers and schools to create a day where there are educational courses about the disease, and musical performances to generate money for donations.

Introduction: I have been putting the 100th change/addition/modification to a manuscript that was just submitted for publication. The manuscript concerns the role of SARS-CoV-2 to promote neurodegeneration in Parkinsons . And then I remembered that Monday was World Parkinsons Day.

Why am I so Busy?: And again, it seems there is no time available right now to write on my blog. So just teaching my undergraduate level pathobiology course and submitting some papers for publication . Also, just trying to retire , buy a house , and exercise more frequently, and I will remain forever a beginning guitar player unless I make time to practice. In addition, I am trying to help my Comp Sci student group work on our interactive mindfulness meditation project . I am also trying to recruit a graphics artist for a book Ive got an idea for dealing with Parkinsons. And yes, I am trying to kick-start my non-profit for Parkinsons. Finally, trying to make time for Susan and our personal life and making time to play golf in the spring. First, however, it is essential to say a few words about World Parkinsons Day.

World Parkinsons Day History

World Parkinson’s Day – 11 April 2022

The European Parkinsons Disease Association and the World Health Organization established World Parkinsons Day on April 11th, 1997. April 11th is the birthday of Dr. James Parkinson. He is the first physician to recognize Parkinsons as a medical condition. He published an essay in 1817 called, An Essay on the Shaking Palsy. During the 9th World Parkinsons Disease Day Conference in 2005, the red tulip was adopted as the official symbol for the disease.

History Of World Parkinsons Day

Dr. James Parkinson, an English doctor and scientist, first described the disease in An Essay on the Shaking Palsy, which was published in 1817. He described a pattern of lessened muscular power, involuntary tremulous motion, even if these are supported. He also wrote of the fact that there is a tendency for people with this disease to bend the body forward and to involuntarily switch from a walking to a running pace, while the sense and intellect deteriorate.

It wasnt until several decades later, in the 1870s, that the ailment was given the name Parkinsons Disease . When French Neurologist Jean Martin Charcot picked up and continued the work started by Dr. Parkinson, Charcot then named the disease in honor of him.

The first World Parkinsons Day took place in 1997. It was started by a collaboration between the World Health Organization and the European Parkinsons Disease Association , with the two groups having a focus on raising awareness and support for research and information surrounding prevention of and a cure for this medical condition. It is now an official WHO holiday supported by the United Nations.

One of the prominent symbols of Parkinsons disease is the red tulip, and this was established at the 9th World Parkinsons disease Day at the Luxembourg Conference.

Theres no doubt that World Parkinsons Day is an important cause to get behind, and this is the perfect day to do it. So now its time to get started and observe this day!

Make Awareness Month Meaningful

During the month of April, I will be spending time telling others about how exercise is medicine for Parkinson’s. Is there something you can do for Parkinsons Awareness Month?

One suggestion is to start by making people around you more familiar with this disorder. It is important to help others learn more about this neurodegenerative disease.

Let me know what you are doing if you decide to participate in some activity for Parkinsons Awareness Month.

However, as you approach your disorder with steely-eyed-determination, treat every new day as a day for Parkinson’s awareness. It will make a difference in your approach to treatment and hopefully yield an improved quality-of-life.

World Parkinson’s Day 202: Foods To Prevent Or Manage The Disease

  • World Parkinson’s Day 2022: Parkinson’s disease has no cure but it can be managed by making some dietary changes. An expert on foods to eat and avoid for managing the disease.

Parmita Uniyal

World Parkinson’s Day 2022: World Parkinson’s Day is observed annually on April 11 to spread awareness about the neurodegenerative disease which has a wide range of symptoms from shaking, stiffness, balance and coordination issues to difficulty in walking and talking. The day also marks the anniversary of James Parkinson who wrote the article – An Essay on the Shaking Palsy in 1817, recognising the disease for the first time.

The theme of this years awareness month for the Parkinsons Foundation is #FutureOfPD, focusing on research, care, and life planning, according to Parkinson’s News Today.

The neurodegenerative movement disorder occurs when the dopamine-producing cells in a part of the brain called substantia nigra start to deteriorate. It mainly affects people over 60, although younger people are also at risk. The symptoms of the disease are tremor in limbs, stiffness, problems in coordinating movements, posture problems, and sleep problems. There is much to be still known about this condition.

Parkinson’s disease has unfortunately no cure but it can be managed by making some dietary changes.

Eat Omega-3 fatty acids

Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown in studies to reduce nerve inflammation, increase neurotransmission, and halt neurodegeneration.

Limit sugar and salt

April 11, 2022 is World Parkinson’s Day!

Parkinsons disease, a progressive nervous system disorder, primarily affects movement due to the loss of specific brain cells. To spread awareness about the condition, World Parkinsons Disease Day is observed every year on April 11. This year, the theme for the day is integrated healthcare considered vital for all those living with Parkinsons disease.

The theme aims to stress the importance of a multidisciplinary approach involving mental health support, nutritional support, exercise, and language for the holistic well-being of those affected by this disease. As such, it is significant to pay special focus towards ones balance, walking, standing, reflexesand lifestyle to cope with Parkinsons disease along with required medical treatment.

Parkinson’s Disease Can Happen To Anybody

In the European Union , approximately 1.2 million people have their lives impacted by Parkinson’s Disease.

World Parkinson’s Awareness Day aims to raise global awareness of Parkinson’s disease. In general, members of the public have very limited knowledge about this condition.

Following an online survey in 2009 by the EPDA in which over 5000 people took part, it was found that over 50% did not know Parkinson’s was a neurological condition which affects movement. Even more striking was that over 75% of people surveyed did not know that rigidity, in which a person is unable to move their body is a key motor symptom of this disease.

If so many people are unaware of the key motor symptoms of Parkinson’s then gathering support for people with this condition is made much harder. It is also likely that people are unaware of the non motor symptoms that people with Parkinson’s may endure .

It is hoped that Parkinson’s Awareness Day will promote advocacy and influence the decision of relevant policy makers where appropriate.

The day also provides an opportunity to raise funds for management, research projects, and resources.

For further information about World Parkinson’s Day visit the sponsor’s website.

What Health also features information on Parkinson’s Awareness Week and Parkinson’s Awareness Month.

Summary

Non Motor Symptoms Include:

  • Attention Deficit
  • Difficulties planning and carrying out ordinary tasks

The motor symptoms of Parkinson’s are based around involuntary movements or rigidity . The impact of these motor symptoms in the day to day life of a person with Parkinson’s are immense this awareness event aims in part, to make more people understand the severity of these symptoms.

For example, a person may not be able to perform a simple activity like crossing the road in case their ‘feet freeze’ making them unable to walk. When shopping, they may be unable to take money out from a purse or wallet to pay for items due to involuntary arm and hand movements.

Symptoms are unpredictable and can vary on a time scale as short as one minute.

Many people who have heard of Parkinson’ disease associate this condition with the physical symptoms of tremor or rigidity. These symptoms may be shown as head bobbing or other sudden involuntary jerking movements. World Parkinson’s Day aims to make more people aware of the non motor symptoms.

How Did The Idea Of The Spark Come About

World Parkinson

In August 2021, a partnership of groups and individuals dedicated to campaigning about Parkinson’s see above got together and agreed that World Parkinsons Day needed greater impact, coordination and recognition.

There was a call for submissions, asking members of the global Parkinsons communities to submit ideas and inspiration for the logo. A design was chosen that the group felt reflected the spirit of Parkinsons, but would also work effectively in multiple design and national settings.
