A recent study published in the Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine outlined the impact of High-Intensity Interval Training cycling in patients with mild-to-moderate PD. Participants saw improvements in their cardiovascular health, brain functionality, and their bodys circulation of oxygen after periods of short, intense bursts of cycling for three times a week over an eight week period.

The Basic Elements Of Exercising With Parkinsons

In a 24-week supervised treadmill training exercise, the frequency and severity of motor and nonmotor symptoms, and subsequent effects on daily living improved at follow-up for patients with PD. In addition, a positive effect on mood and depression was observed, as indicated by a decrease in Beck Depression Inventory scores after 6 months of training.15 Progressive resistance exercise by patients with PD for 2 days each week for 24 months resulted in improved quality of life based on Parkinsons Disease Questionnaire-39 scores.22 A systematic review of the effect of physical activity on nonmotor symptoms in PD reviewing 20 studies of various exercise modalities with intervention time frames ranging from 4 weeks to 3 years showed that exercise improved of depression and daytime sleepiness in patients with PD.28 Exercise has been associated with the amelioration of numerous nonmotor symptoms leading to improvement of quality of life.
