Studies have also reported that minorities are underrepresented in the general nursing home population, with black persons having 25% to 50% lower LTCF utilization rates than white persons., We found that African Americans with a PD diagnosis were relatively overrepresented in the LTCF population . Hispanic individuals were more common in the community PD population .
Medicare Coverage Of Home Care
In order to receive home care under Medicare:
- You must be home-bound.
- Your doctor must certify a plan of care.
- Care must be needed on an intermittent basis.
- Care cannot exceed 35-hours per week or eight hours per day.
- Physical or speech therapy must be provided on a “necessary and reasonable” basis. There are restrictions on the number of days or hours per week of these therapies.
- If you qualify for home health care, you are entitled to a home health aide to provide some personal care.

As of 2018, Medicare no longer has an annual limit on medically required outpatient physical therapy costs, and there is no longer a limit on how many sessions are covered weekly or monthly within a year. However, you’ll still need to pay 20% of the Medicare-approved payment for each session, so more sessions will mean more out-of-pocket expenses for you.
Once your total therapy costs reach a certain threshold, you’ll need to provide confirmation that the therapy is medically required.
For 2020 the therapy cost thresholds are:
- $2,080 for PT and SLP.
- $2,080 for OT.
If your total therapy costs exceed $3,000, Medicare might request a targeted medical review to examine the medical reasons for your therapy.
