Abstract

1. Introduction

Acupuncture and herbal medicine are used in combination rather than independently in clinical situation. However, in most studies, only the single-treatment effects of acupuncture and herbal medicine have been assessed. Thus, it is necessary to pragmatically evaluate the effects of a combined treatment with acupuncture and herbal medicine in PD.

Natural Remedies And Treatments For Parkinsons Disease That Get Powerful Results

To successfully treat the symptoms of Parkinson’s, andeven reverse this disorder, there are 4 things you must do…

a)  Increase your natural dopamine levels

b)  Detox your body of all heavy metals andpollutants

c)  Reduce all inflammation in the body, especially the brain

d) Repair the neuro pathways

These 10 natural treatments and remedies do all four. Solet’s not waste any more time then. Here they are in order of importance…

Are Complementary Therapies Available On The Nhs Or The Hsc In Northern Ireland

This will depend on the type of therapy you want and the policy in your area.

Some hospitals and GP practices offer a few complementary therapies like acupuncture, aromatherapy, massage, osteopathy and chiropractic treatments.

Speak to your GP, specialist or Parkinson’s nurse about what’s available locally. Your Parkinson’s local adviser may also be able to help you.

Some GPs have training in complementary therapies. If they can’t provide the treatment themselves, they may be able to refer you to a therapist on the NHS.

Naturaltreatment For Parkinsons #9 Exercise And Other Alternative Therapies:

Can acupuncture help with Parkinson’s? – RISE BC

Regular exercise has been shown to help Parkinson’ssufferers by reducing muscle stiffness, increasing mobility, and enhancing postureand balance. Exercise also increases oxygen levels and neurotransmitters, alongwith releasing potent “mood elevating” chemicals called endorphins.

The type of exercise performed for PD is crucial. Aqua orwater aerobics can be particularly useful as traditional exercise is usuallyquite difficult for many Parkinson’s sufferers. Muscle decline, loss of strength, stiffness and loss of balance can make conventional exercises difficult toperform. The great thing about aqua aerobics is it still has the same benefits as other exercise regimens, but the risk of falling is eliminated.

Other types of exercises that can be beneficial for PDsufferers include Tai Chi, Yoga, dancing, walking, aerobic/jazzercise classes, and general stretching.

For more information on the different exercise programsavailable for Parkinson’s patients, you can check out this website…  Exercise and Physical Therapy for Parkinson’sDisease

Can I Use Complementary Therapies Instead Of Taking Parkinsons Medication

Complementary therapies don’t work as a replacement for Parkinson’s medication. Stopping or making changes to your Parkinson’s medication can be dangerous without the guidance of your specialist or Parkinson’s nurse.

Generally speaking, the complementary therapies listed in this information are considered safe. But before taking tablets, pills or capsules, applying creams or drops or drinking teas, you should talk to your GP, specialist or Parkinson’s nurse. This is because some herbs and remedies may have side effects or clash with medications you’re already taking. Your healthcare professional may also be able to recommend a therapist, or advise you on other sources of information.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency is the government agency responsible for making sure that medicines and medical devices work, and are safe.

Some complementary therapies may not be safe during pregnancy. So it’s essential that you tell not only your GP, specialist or Parkinson’s nurse but also your complementary therapist if you’re trying for or expecting a baby.

It’s not always easy to tell what is or isn’t safe and many organisations offering therapy give the impression of being reliable even when they’re not.

What Are The Main Complementary Therapies Used By People With Parkinsons

The rest of this information looks at some complementary therapies you may find helpful. Please remember that although we’ve included them here, we can’t recommend any particular therapy.

Our forum is also a great place to find out what people are trying and how they feel about different therapies.

Acupuncture is a form of ancient Chinese medicine. It involves a therapist inserting thin needles at particular points on your body.

Traditional practitioners believe that energy flows round the body through channels which, when blocked, can cause illness. The role of acupuncture is to unblock the channels.

Some scientists believe the needles act to stimulate muscles and nerves, which is what causes the effects.

Acupuncture needles are very fine so shouldn’t cause a lot of pain. Your therapist will stimulate them manually using heat, pressure, electrical currents or laser light.

Natural Treatment For Parkinsons #3 Turmeric And Otherherbs And Spices:

A recent study published in the journal Stem Cell Research & Therapy, foundthat the extracts in turmeric, particularly curcumin and the newly discovered Ar-turmerone,can regenerate “a damaged brain” and reverse neurological disorders.  Researchers said Ar-turmerone is “a promising candidate to supportregeneration in neurologic disease.” Michigan State University researcherBasir Ahmad also found that a compound in turmeric may help fight Parkinson’sdisease by disrupting the proteins responsible for the disease.

Another study published in the Pharmacognosy Magazine found that tumeric can prevent and evenreverse the toxic effects exerted on the brain from fluoride exposure. Fluorideis a nasty and dangerous heavy metal that destroys brain cells and the intricateworkings of the central nervous system. Fluoride poisoning has also beenimplicated in the development of neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s,Parkinson’s, ALS and multiple sclerosis. 7

Turmeric is also a very potent anti-inflammatory spice. Because Parkinson’s is aninflammation type disease, turmeric will help immensely. A heaped teaspoon ofhigh quality turmeric powder taken 3 times daily in asmoothie will do the trick. Just make sure you combine it with 10-12 blackpeppercorns for enhanced absorption Turmeric is also fat soluble so you’ll need tocombine it with some coconut oil, red palm oil or fish/krill oil as well.

Improvements/characters In Acupuncture Studies During The Past 5 Years

RCTs and Meta-Analysis Studies Based on RCTs Are Increasing

More rigorously designed RCTs and meta-analyses following PRISMA rules were used to evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture. This will provide more convincing evidence for the efficacy of acupuncture. Increasing numbers of acupuncture investigators have accepted the principles of evidence-based medicine and recognized that only well-designed RCTs can provide powerful and convincing evidence for the efficacy of acupuncture, which is the only way for acupuncture to step into mainstream medical academia. In the present study, seven recent RCTs and four meta-analysis studies evaluated the efficacy of acupuncture. Although some studies did not reach a satisfactory quality , the data obtained from RCTs cannot be ignored.

Non-motor Symptoms Are Increasingly Emphasized

In addition to the motor symptoms of PD, more clinicians are paying attention to the non-motor symptoms . We found several studies that evaluated the efficacy of acupuncture for non-motor symptoms. Noh et al. found that acupuncture was effective against PD-related stress ; Kluger reported that acupuncture could relieve PD-related fatigue ; studies by Liang et al. and Wang et al. showed that acupuncture could relieve PD-related sleepiness; and QOL in PD patients could be improved by acupuncture . The non-motor symptoms of PD are quite complex. More investigations can be expected to verify the efficacy of acupuncture for various non-motor symptoms in PD.

Effect Of Acupuncture On Nonmotor Symptoms Of Parkinson’s Disease

Nonmotor symptoms of PD are common but are often under-recognized in clinic practice due to the lack of spontaneous complaints from patients. NMS in PD was systematically reviewed for the first time by Chaudhuri et al. 3. NMS ranges from autonomic dysfunction, neuropsychiatric disorders, sleep disturbance, sensory symptoms to gastrointestinal syndromes, fatigue, and many others and are often under-treated 3. NMS occurs throughout the course of the disease. Some of them, such as depression, fatigue, and smelling dysfunction, may appear at the earliest stage of the disease in un-treated patients. Others appear at the advanced stage of the disease. At the time of diagnosis, the prevalence of NMS among patients with PD was 21% and went up to 88% after 7-year disease progression 14, 35. Indeed, nonmotor aspects of PD had greater impact on quality of life and cause higher institutionalization rates and healthcare cost 36.

Natural Treatment For Parkinsons #1 Cannabis/medicalmarijuana:

Cannabis, aka medical marijuana, is an incredibletreatment for Parkinson’s disease. You can have a Parkinson’s patient shakingviolently and uncontrollably, and yet within 30-40 minutes of self-administering with some cannabis, their symptoms will almost completely disappear. Watch this short 2minute video from Parkinson’s sufferer, Ian Frizell, who shows you what he waslike before self-medicating with cannabis and then again after. The change is truly astonishing!

.

Taylor French is another Parkinson’s patient thatundergoes a remarkable transformation once he ingests what he calls “nutritional vegetable extract” . This guy has an advanced form ofParkinson’s and is normally confined to a wheelchair with limited use of hisbody due to stiff and rigid muscles . But after ingestingsome cannabis he’s able to walk, and incredibly, in his video he even getsinto his car and drives off down the road!

You can view it here…

Elyse Del Francia also tells the story of her Parkinson’ssuffering husband, and the time she decided to smother his morning pancakes withsome canabutter. She said…

“Within45 minutes of eating a pancake with marijuana on it, he stopped shaking. Thatwas my lightbulb moment. That’s when I knew that I was onto something thatwould relieve his pain and suffering, because it’s horrible, horrible, to haveParkinson’s Disease and not have any relief. I feel that this is something thathelps so many people in so many ways with pain and suffering.” 5

Effect Of Acupuncture On Motor Symptoms Of Parkinson’s Disease

6 Medication

In a large clinical study 25, 80 PD subjects were divided into treatment group and control group , it was found that acupuncture treatment for 4 weeks produced a significant improvement in motor function including tremor and gait disturbance compared to control group; however, the study did not mention how the motor functions were assessed 25. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging technique, Chae et al. 26 explored the neural mechanism of specific effect of acupuncture stimulation on the motor function of patients with PD. When acupuncture stimulation at acupoint GB34 on patients with PD, fMRI revealed the activation of the putamen and primary motor cortex. The patients experienced a significant improvement of motor function, finger-tapping tasks of affected hand following acupuncture 26. This suggested that acupuncture exerted its beneficial effect via its ability to modulate neuronal activities in the specific motor-related brain regions in patients with PD.

Hand Shaking Tremor Symptoms May Be Improved With Acupuncture

Essential tremor often first affects the hands. The exact cause hasn’t been discovered yet, even though scientists have been researching treatment for many years. There is, however, a relationship between Acupuncture and Essential Tremor. Uncontrollable shakiness, especially in the hands can be slowed down by Acupuncture.

Essential tremor is a neurological condition causing involuntary trembling with a rhythmic pattern. It is often more noticeable when affecting the hands, which is also the area that is usually affected first. Essential tremor progresses slowly and usually affects the hands, arms, head, larynx, tongue, and chin. Onset is typically gradual. Exacerbations of the condition may be triggered by lack of sleep, anxiety, fatigue, caffeine, and extreme temperatures.

Essential tremors are shown to affect approximately 1 percent of the general population, although that number increases to 5 percent in patients 65 years and older, which means it affects approximately 10 million people in the U.S. alone.

Conventional treatment of essential tremors, for are generally limited to lifestyle changes and medications. Drugs like Beta blockers, anti-epileptics, and electrical deep brain stimulations are the only routes of therapy that conventional medicine offers. These may or may not work, and sometimes come with undesirable side effects.

Why Have You Included Therapies With No Scientific Evidence

The therapies in this information have all been chosen because they’re popular with people affected by Parkinson’s.

Just because a therapy can’t be proven to work in a medical trial, or there hasn’t been enough research about whether it helps people with Parkinson’s, it doesn’t mean you won’t find it useful. In fact, we’ve heard from many people who tell us they have benefited from using these therapies.

Many of our local groups organise complementary therapy sessions at their meetings to encourage members to give them a try.

Throughout this information, we highlight what scientific evidence there is to support the use of each therapy.

How Can Physiotherapy Benefit Those With Parkinsons Disease

Apart from medication and surgical procedures, it has been established that physical therapy for Parkinson’s disease yields great results. Physiotherapy can benefit a patient suffering from Parkinson’s in resisting the regressive changes that follow this disease and in recovering from it.

Physiotherapy can have many positive effects on patients with Parkinson’s disease:

How Long Does Acupuncture Take To Deliver Positive Results

Acupuncture therapy will reduce the symptoms drastically after every treatment session. Experts do not know how long the treatment effects last in the long term even though it delivers effective results overall.

Overall, this essential tremor solution, Acupuncture is one of the most effective treatments to restore health from tremors and other common conditions and diseases. In the clinical setting, acupuncture has seen marked therapeutic effects, reducing or eliminating the effects of hand tremors and maintaining an improved quality of life.

How Acupuncture Helps Relieve Parkinsons Disease Symptoms

More than one million people in this country suffer from Parkinson’s disease. It strikes 50 percent more men than women, with an average age of onset of 60 years old. PD is a chronic and progressive neurodegenerative disease that has no cure currently. Many patients take medication to suppress symptoms, such as involuntary shaking. However, more and more people are seeking complementary therapies to relieve their symptoms.

In particular, acupuncture has been found to be very helpful in alleviating PD symptoms. A study appearing in Medicine analyzed the clinical effectiveness of acupuncture on Parkinson’s disease, taking the results of nearly 1,000 articles and studies that showed favorable results for acupuncture in conjunction with conventional treatment compared with conventional treatment alone in the treatment of PD symptoms.

This particular study’s researchers performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to find out if acupuncture did indeed relieve PD symptoms. The result? Acupuncture was found to have significant positive effects. It’s generally considered to be a combination treatment with conventional treatment.

Despite the many positive findings over the years, acupuncture remains difficult to study. Why? Well, it faces many limitations in the research setting, such as being associated with a high placebo effect as is the case with many complementary therapies, according to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

Hand tremor or shaky hands, stiffness in limbs, trouble walking, or problems with balance? These may be signs of Parkinson’s Disease . Parkinsons is a progressive neurological disorder that primarily affects the brain cells that produce dopamine. Integrative care with acupuncture treatment may help relieve symptoms of Parkinson’s disease better than conventional treatments alone.

Parkinson’s disease is a neurological disorder that causes damage and dysfunction in brain cells, so that communications between the brain and the body don’t work the way they usually do. Sometimes a range of symptoms similar to those experienced by people with Parkinson’s occurs due to small strokes that affect the blood supply to the brain. This condition is called vascular parkinsonism.

More than ten million people are currently living with Parkinson’s disease worldwide. The chances of having PD increase with age, and men are more likely to have Parkinson’s than women. Early onset Parkinson’s can occur in people under 50. While it is often considered a movement disorder that causes hand tremors and other problems with mobility, Parkinson’s disease can cause less obvious symptoms, too.

Several systematic reviews previously examined the efficacy of acupuncture, but focused mainly on classical and electroacupuncture.

A group of researchers at institutions in Zhengzhou and Guangzhou analyzed trials that evaluated a variety of different types of acupuncture.

Among the different techniques used were traditional body needling, manual acupuncture, electroacupuncture , bee venom acupuncture , and acupressure .

Acupuncture-related therapies included forms like warm needling that is used with moxibustion , and acupoint injection, hydroacupuncture , or herbal decoction, used either with moxibustion or with medications.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials compared acupuncture-related therapies combined with standard treatment versus standard medication alone in Parkinson’s patients. Standard medications included Madopar , levodopa, carbidopa, and Mirapex , used alone or in combination.

Data reviewed came from 66 published trials, with 61 selected for the meta-analysis. High-quality articles were defined as those with a low risk of bias in four or more domains. Based on this definition, only 10 articles were considered high quality.

Other outcome measures included assessments of mentation, behavior, and mood , and therapy complications ; the 39-item Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire , changes in Madopar doses; the Mini-Mental State Examination ; and the 17-item Hamilton Depression Scale .

Parkinsons Disease Treatment 17 Facts You Should Know

    Parkinson’s Disease treatment – Parkinson’s Diet
    • No particular diet can treat Parkinson’s illness or its side effects as such. But a solid and adjusted eating regimen can enhance general prosperity.
    • So eating foods grown from the ground may help keep you empowered and hydrated. Also, intake of Fiber-rich diet and liquids may ease the symptoms.
    • Levodopa is the commonly used medicine in Parkinson’s Disease Treatment. It is also a protein building block. So it competes with other different proteins in food for absorption. Eating a high protein diet lessens the probability of absorbing levodopa properly. So one has to leave meat, fish, and cheese.
parkinson’s disease treatment – include more carbohydrates and vegetables
    • Eat more carbohydrates and vegetables. Taking medicine on a void stomach is good. But thirty minutes earlier or an hour after food is advisable. Because this enables the medication to assimilate quicker in the digestive tract. But a carbohydrate nibble with the drug is advisable. Because it will help to avert nausea.
    •  Dopamine agonist medicines needn’t require any dietetic change. The individuals who take MAO-B inhibitors ought to eat with control their diet. They should avoid foods high in tyramine. Because MAO-B inhibitors increase tyramine.
    • This can lead to increased blood pressure. So avoid cured or fermented meat and fish. Also avoid aged cheese, fermented cabbages, soybean products, red wine and tap beer.

Naturaltreatment For Parkinsons #6 Magnesium & Iodine:

Magnesium is vital for the health of the entire nervoussystem, especially the protective layer that surrounds the nerves . Magnesiumis also essential for the production of dopamine and helps protect dopaminergicneurons in the substantia nigra from degeneration. In addition to this, new evidence is showing that low levels of magnesium in the brain causes a build-up ofheavy metals – a major factor in the development of Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s,epilepsy and MS. In a recent trial, 30 epileptics were given 450 mg ofmagnesium daily and this successfully controlled their seizures. Ifmagnesium can help epilepsy patients, it can certainly help Parkinson’s sufferers. Worldrenowned magnesium expert and author, Dr Carolyn Dean, has both Parkinson’s andAlzheimer’s disease in her “top 55 health conditions caused by amagnesium deficiency” list and says that magnesium is 100% essential for the preventionand treatment of both of these diseases… Dr Carolyn Dean Interview

In regards to iodine, well-known researcher and author,Dr James Howenstein, says…

“Iodineis found in large quantities in the brain and the ciliary body of the eye. A lackof iodine may be involved in the production of Parkinson’s disease andglaucoma.”

“Inthe brain, iodine concentrates in the substantia nigra, an area of the brainthat has been associated with Parkinson’s disease.”

Natural Remedy For Parkinsons #4 Chlorella And Borax:

If you have a neurological disease such as Parkinson’s orAlzheimer’s, the importance of removing heavy metals from the body – especiallyfrom the brain and nervous system – cannot be overstated. Heavy metalsaccumulate in the brain and nervous system at a rapid rate and cause damage tothe neurological pathways and “brain inflammation”. Fluoride is one ofthe worst, however, mercury, lead, aluminium and cadmium are also extremely dangerous.Chlorella and borax not only remove these heavy metals completely, theycontinue to prevent further toxic build-ups.

Chlorella is a miracle blue-green algae and one of themost powerful detoxifiers and chelators yet discovered. Whenit’s combined with cilantro, its benefits are enhancedsignificantly. A Russian study found that chlorella, combined with cilantro, was able to remove all heavy metals from the body, including fluoride and mercury, with no adverse or harmful side effects. You can purchase chlorellain powdered form online or from most health food stores. Just make sure you buythe Broken Cell Wall Chlorella as this is the strongest and most bio-available.For dosage recommendations, simply follow the directions on the container.

Naturalremedy For Parkinsons #10 Foods You Must Avoid

There are certain foods that are known to worsen thesymptoms of Parkinson’s and certain foods that are known to help. Healthadvocate, Dr Joseph Mercola, says that Parkinson’s disease is primarily relatedto poor lifestyle choices, particularly poor dietary habits. Increasing yourbody’s natural dopamine levels is also extremely important in your fight againstPD.

The foods and liquids you should be eating and drinkingmore of to help you along include:

    ·        Clean Filtered Water – Clean filtered water helpsto flush toxins from the body and hydrate the cells .Try and aim to drink at least two liters of water every day, and under nocircumstances drink tap water! Tap water is laced with toxic fluoride and otherchemicals and heavy metals so NEVER drink it. Buy yourself a good quality waterfilter. It’s worth the investment.

    ·        Whole Foods and Raw Foods – Eat plenty oforganic mixed berries, green leafy vegetables, liver , fish, eggs, nuts and seeds such as chia and flaxseeds, along with plenty of herbs andspices. When it comes to buying any of these remember fresh is alwaysbest.

    ·        Consume Lots of Probiotics – Good gutbacteria are needed for strong immunity and healthy digestive function, whichin turn produces healthy brain and nerve function. You can learn how to makeyour own probiotic rich foods such as kefir, sauerkraut, kombucha and yogurt here…Cultures for Health.

What Are The Treatment Options For Parkinsons Disease

When a person suffers from Parkinson’s disease, the nerve cells fail to produce enough dopamine to send signals to the brain to control conscious and unconscious actions. The condition gets progressively worse over time.

However, there are means through which one could reduce the impact of this condition to a certain extent. Such treatment options include medication, surgery, and physical therapy.

    Medication

As the symptoms such as tremors, muscle stiffness, and walking issues start to appear, doctors may prescribe certain commonly regarded medications such as Levodopa, MAO B Inhibitors, Dopamine Agonists and Antivirals.

These medicines are, however, more useful at the initial stages of the disease. After time elapses, these medications start to lose the effectiveness they had at earlier stages.

The prescription and dosage depend on the severity of the condition.

    Surgical Procedures

In the case of Parkinson’s disease, a surgical procedure known as “Deep Brain Stimulation” has provided patients with good results.

A wire is placed inside of the patient’s brain and helps the brain more effectively receive electrical signals. If effective, this improves the functioning power of the brain.

    Physical Therapy

Physical therapy can help patients deal with the effects of Parkinson’s disease. Specially designed exercises such as breathing, stretching, rhythmic, static and dynamic exercises are implemented to relieve some of the pain experienced by the patient.

Parkinson’s disease is a fairly common progressive degenerative central nervous system  disorder. Affecting approximately one million people in the U.S., Parkinson’s disease is a dysfunction in the basal ganglia, an area of the brain that controls voluntary movement. Characteristic symptoms of this chronic, progressive neurodegenerative movement disorder include tremors, rigidity, slow movement , poor balance and difficulty walking .

Is A Therapy Unsafe If Its Not Statutorily Regulated

Not necessarily. Some complementary therapies are regulated by statutory law, including osteopaths, chiropractors and art therapists. This means that, in the same way GPs and specialists have to register with the General Medical Council, these therapists must register with a statutory regulator before they can practise. One reason for statutory regulation is the level of risk linked to a particular therapy. For example, the government considered regulating acupuncture, but took the view that because acupuncturists were well self-regulated, it wasn’t needed.

    Home Remedyfor Parkinsons #5 Vitamin D & Vitamin E:

7 Hand Exercises to Help People With Parkinson’s Disease ...

Inflammation and low immunity are two powerful factorsthat contribute to the development and worsening of Parkinson’s disease. Bothvitamin D and vitamin E are strong anti-inflammatories and immune boosters. VitaminD & E also protect our brain cells and can even help damaged neurons regenerate. A deficiency of these key vitamins has also been linked to brain difficultiessuch as poor memory and recall attainability.

In regards to PD, a study of 157 Parkinson’s patientsfound that the vast majority of them had severe to chronic vitamin Ddeficiencies. The findings, published in the Archives of Neurology in March of 2011, revealed a strong linkbetween inadequate levels of vitamin D and the onset of early Parkinson’sdisease.4

Back in 2002, another study was published in the Archives of Neurology which tracked themental decline of 3,000 men and women diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease over a period of 7 years. The study found the participants whose supplemental vitamin E intakewas higher experienced a 36% reduction in theseverity of their symptoms compared to the rest of the group. Another study, whichappeared in the Lancet Neurology onlinemagazine in 2005, showed that vitamin E may actually prevent Parkinson’sdisease from developing in the first place! 8
