Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Parkinsons Australia

1). Avoid Dangerous Situations

Not a bad idea under any circumstances, but especially relevant to persons with unsteadiness. Dangerous situations occur when senses are overloaded such as in a crowd, too much is happening too fast or when traction is poor such as in slippery weather.

  • Slow down, avoid hurrying.
  • Concentrate on what you are doing. Dont try to do two things at the same time.
  • Plan movements through difficult situations.
  • Take opportunities to rest and sit. Sit to work.
  • Avoid night driving if your vision or balance senses are poor
  • Avoid crowds. Walk with crowds that cannot be avoided.
  • If you have low blood pressure or are on blood pressure medication, be very careful in rising to a standing position. Stand still for a few seconds, regain your balance, and then begin moving. Elderly persons often have lower blood pressure after eating. Also, hot baths and showers may lower blood pressure until you cool off again.
  • If you need to get up during the night to urinate, use a bedroom as close as you can to the bathroom, or get a bedside commode.
  • Be extra careful after taking an enema .
  • Be extra careful in the tub or shower the surface may be slick.
  • Be extra careful when you are acutely ill .
  • Avoid walking while moving the head from side to side, or held in unusual positions such as tilted upward.
  • Be careful about high-speed elevators.

2). Improve Your Senses

Often balance is impaired by loss of vision, position sense, or sensation of movement.

How Can Lasers Help

The lasers create visual cues that keep your attention and allow your concentration to remain on moving forward. Visual cueing with these specially equipped shoes was tested in the lab and found to be successful. Lines projected on the floor, created by movement in the opposite foot, give you direction to move.

Some people already use this approach, without the lasers, by crossing the street where there is a striped crosswalk. They also put tiles or floorboards in their home where they can move over the lines with each successive step. Visual cueing is used in other aspects of PD as well, particularly when addressing memory and psychological issues. Lasers are a new application in this area.3

Many people associate this disease with shaking tremors and difficulty speaking. When I received the call, I was out Christmas shopping for our two girls. Esther, we brought your dad to the emergency, they are doing a MRI and blood tests.

What happened?, I asked. As far as I knew, my father had Alzheimers disease but was getting around normally.

Two days after he was at the hospital, my mother called back: Your dad has been diagnosed with Parkinsons disease, she said. I realize the signs now, she continued. Even when we first got married, his leg would shake sometimes with tremors when we were going to sleep.

I made my mom and the girls supper that night. I helped my mom get Daddy up and into the wheelchair so he could sit by us in the kitchen. Daddy looked longingly at the chicken enchiladas and refried beans. Are you hungry, Daddy?, I asked.

Yes, came the barely formed words as he was still staring at the food.

Adaptive Makeup And Hair Tips

Planning your life around Parkinson’s

For many people with Parkinsons, applying makeup can be a challenge especially when fine motor skills are needed. Here are some tips for adapting the makeup application process:

  • Switch to skincare products with a pump mechanism or transfer your preferred products to bottles with a pump.
  • Apply makeup while sitting instead of standing. When possible, rest your arm on a surface to apply makeup. Consider purchasing a vanity mirror so you can apply makeup sitting at a surface in your home.
  • Use foam tubing grips. These grips can help provide more surface area for hand-held items, like brushes.
  • Purchase a hair dryer stand that you can attach to a surface.

Balancepro Insoles Can Improve Walking Stability For Parkinsons

The key inventor of BalancePro insole, Dr. Stephen Perry has conducted a research study using the BalancePro insoles with people with Parkinsons disease. BalancePro insoles provides increased plantar sensory stimulation during gait in a group of individuals with Parkinsons disease in comparison with healthy age-matched controls. Spatialtemporal parameters of gait were evaluated using an instrumented carpet, and muscle activation patterns were evaluated using surface electromyography . All participants were tested with both BalancePro insoles and conventional insoles while walking 20 feet. Results indicated that the use of the BalancePro insoles produced a significant increase in single-limb support time. Additionally, the muscle activation sequence of the tibialis anterior was normalized by the facilitatory insole, at the time of initial ground contact. These changes may lead to an overall improvement in gait pattern and stability, and suggests that the use of the BalancePro insoles may be a useful treatment strategy for improving the gait of individuals with Parkinsons disease. This also provides support for the role of facilitation of the foot sole sensation in improving motor output in individuals with Parkinsons disease2.

What has been the projects biggest challenge?

It was paramount to develop a solution that met a lot of requirements in order to satisfy user needs. I wanted to create a product that was discreet and intuitive, which is why I decided to place the laser on the shoe. This allows the user to walk as they normally do, without needing to think about how to use the product. This is different from existing laser cue devices, such as canes, where the user has to place it in a certain location to ensure correct display of the laser line.

How have you funded the project?

We have won a range of grants that have helped fund our development so far. In addition to that, we have invested our own savings and time in making it happen.

How do you see Path Finder evolving?

Yes. Our initial results are very encouraging, so there is a great potential for the product to benefit users. This will increase quality of life and reduce the risk of falling, impacting both users and their families. It could also lead to significant reduction in costs for healthcare providers such as the NHS. Following successful user trials, we will seek regulatory approvals to establish Path Finder as a medical device, so that it can be recommended by healthcare professionals. We aim to have it on the market in approximately two years.
