Linda Ronstadt On Parkinsons Disease And Never Singing Again

If you’ve loved Linda Ronstadt’s music, you now have even more reasons to admire her. Sheila Weller looks at the quiet dignity of the superstar as she deals with Parkinson’s Disease.

My heart sank. Surely millions of hearts sank.

How could there be any other reaction to hear Linda Ronstadt on CBS Sunday Morning, humbly and thoughtfully musing about the fact that the Parkinsons Disease she was diagnosed with in 2013 has deepened to the extent that she cant even sing in the shower? This is a woman who once said, Music is meant to lighten your load. By singing you diminish sadness and feel joy. With shimmering honesty, she said shefears suffering but does not fear dying.

I cant help but admire her dignity and resilience in the face of such a battle. This made me think of the many reasons Ive admired her over the years. In 1967, A Different Drum was my soulful teen-hippie anthem . Her confident, aching contralto was clearly the voice of the Stone Poneys. But, aside from her musical majesty, there was always an air about her, an integrity and rectitude that wonderfully contradicted a rock-chick persona that was mostly projected on her. She was a part-Hispanic girl from Tucson, Arizona, with an un-threateningly pretty face, cool boyfriends, and big earrings people underestimated her for the longest time.

Underestimation is goodit lets a person keep her integrity quietly cooking, unnoticed.

Addressing Questions Within The Parkinsons Community

Based on insights from 46 industry experts including neurologists, researchers and people with the condition who attended the Parkinson Foundations medical marijuana conference in March 2019, the 15-page guide provides information and practical tips for patients and physicians to follow when considering the drug for treatment.

Dr James Beck, Senior Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer at the Parkinsons Foundation, said: At our May 2018 Centers of Excellence Leadership Conference, we asked the clinicians in our network to share what were the notable issues they were addressing in patient care. What we heard was that almost all of their Parkinsons patients were asking about cannabis to treat their Parkinsons it was practically the number one question asked of them.

We hope that if people decide to move forward with trying cannabis products, they have a better sense of how to move forward in a safe way.

He adds that the Foundations biggest concern for new users one which the statement tackles lies around the correct dosage.

Our biggest concern is that someone will not take a careful, incremental approach but inadvertently jump right in with a potent product that could leave them negatively affected such as suffering a fall or hallucinations that could lead them or someone else they love getting hurt. Medicinal Herbs For Parkinsons Disease With The Most Promise As A Treatment

Top 10 Parkinson Symptoms You Should Know

A systematic review of all clinical studies of medicinal herbs for Parkinsons disease for their potential as a treatment found that there were as many as 59 different candidate plants that have been studied but only 64 studies total, meaning that most plants were only studied once.

The review writers failed to find any single strong candidate for Parkinsons treatment. However, this may be due to the fact that there has not been enough properly designed clinical trials that can produce statistically significant results.

Note that a large part of what is published about the use of medicinal herbs for Parkinsons disease is based on user testimonials and an understanding of the nutritional base of neurophysiology. There is a marked lack of proper clinical study of these treatments with respect to Parkinsons.

It should be kept in mind that because clinical research on medicinal herbs for Parkinsons disease is lacking, there are no reliable recommendations for the preparation and dosage of these plant extracts. A medical professional should be consulted.

Mucuna Bean

Mucuna is a natural source of levodopathe precursor to dopamine. Levodopa was first isolated from mucuna in the 1930s. The drug is now produced synthetically.

Mucuna is a climbing, vine-like shrub with large hanging bunches of flowers typical of legume species of the tropics. These flowers develop into a long, hanging seed pod that appears to be furry.

The Story Of Dr Jonathan Lessin Md

As a cardiac anesthesiologist, Dr. Lessin was living his dream. He had a great job, a wonderful wife and two beautiful daughters. Although there was stress related to his job and long hours, he truly enjoyed his work.

While pouring a Coke into a glass, he observed his pinky finger quivering. That was it, a tremor. That tremor motivated Jon to seek the advice of a neurologist who was a friend of his wife’s colleague. Without any hesitation, the neurologist diagnosed Jonathan with Parkinson’s Disease. He was 38 years old. After receiving the news, there was a sense of relief. He was relieved to have a name associated with the strange symptoms he was experiencing.

Ironically, for all the training Jonathan received in medical school, he received very little instruction about Parkinson’s Disease. During that training the focus was on tremors no other symptoms were reviewed. Jonathan took the medical advice from his doctor and began the typical pharmaceutical regime of taking a myriad of medications.

The initial symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease can be very subtle and often do not surface until the symptoms reaches an escalated level. People can have Parkinson’s Disease all their lives but they do not receive a diagnosis until a larger amount of neurons in the brain begin to be impacted. At that point, the outward symptoms begin the surface.

An Original Voice An Original Mind

It was so easy to fall in love with Linda Ronstadts music.

Steve Wasserman, longtime esteemed editor and agent and now publisher and executive editor of Berkeleys Heydey Books, says, I remember well when Linda Ronstadt and I were introduced, nearly ten years ago, by John Rockwell, a mutual friend and former longtime music critic for the New York Times. She was considering writing a memoir that would explore the music that inspired her to become a singer and was looking for a literary agent. I was then living in Connecticut and she was in San Francisco. We spoke on the phone for nearly an hour and I suggested that I thought it best that I fly out to the Bay Area, take her to lunch, so that she could get a sense of the cut of my jib and to see whether the chemistry was right between us. She agreed.

At her suggestion, we met at Greens, a marvelous upscale vegetarian restaurant. When she walked in, I was struck by her pink Uggs and matching sweatshirt. But what was most memorable was her talkthe rushing cascade of sentences by a wonderfully alive and curious person. Working with her was a dream. She proved to be a writer as talented as she was a singer: allergic to cliché, possessed of an original and supple turn of mind, modest with an exemplary lust for life. Sheer bliss.

What Should I Expect At An Appointment

Herbal medicine is not regulated in many countries. It is therefore a good idea to ask your doctor or other healthcare professional for recommendations. Friends, family, other people with Parkinsons or your national Parkinsons association may also be able to advise based on personal experience.

It is advisable to see a therapist who has experience of Parkinsons so do ask about their experience of the condition as well as their qualifications.

The first consultation with a herbal therapist will probably last at least an hour, during which he or she will ask detailed questions about general health, medical and family history, lifestyle and emotional state.

As the approach is holistic, treatment often includes advice on diet and lifestyle as well as herbal remedies. The medicines prescribed may well be made up of a variety of herbs, and will be tailored to individual needs. They can come in a wide range of formulations, including syrups, tinctures, lotions, creams, tablets, inhalations, gargles and washes.

The herbalist may make a follow-up appointment after two weeks, and then monthly, to monitor progress, but this depends on the condition being treated and the individuals general state of health.

New cure for Parkinson’s Tremors

Don’t think I’m crazy for even thinking about posting this. I know this is probably a scam, especially since they are claiming to “cure” a variety of diseases, but I was curious if anyone has heard of this website or know anything about it? I don’t believe herbs will “cure” a disease such as PD, but maybe there are specific herbs that will relieve some of the symptoms?

Just checked this out. Let’s see what they respond to me about parkinsons.

Doctors and experts are baffled by an Indian man who claims not to have eaten or drunk anything for 70 years – but is still in perfect health.

He claims to have been blessed by a goddess when he was 8-years-old, which has enabled him to survive without sustenance and that he derives energy through meditation.

Most people can live without food for several weeks, with the body drawing on its fat and protein stores. But the average human can survive for only three to four days without water.

here is their reply: Welcome to Health Herbal Clinic, we sell herbal medicine to treat all kind of diseases including Parkinson’s disease, we have treated many people of this degenerative disorder around the world through our PD herbal formula, you have absolutely nothing to worry about, we shall send you the herbal

What is the herb they are going to send?

It appears they don’t tell you until it arrives at your door.

Don’t hold your breath!

Description Of The Screening Process

The detailed screening process was summarized in the PRISMA flow diagram . A total of 7,521 potentially relevant hits were initially yielded from the eight databases and other sources, in which 6,570 records were remained after removal of duplicates. Through screening titles and abstracts, we excluded 5,824 papers because they were studies with no relevance to PD , nonclinical trials , case reports, reviews, comments OR protocols . After full-text evaluation, 732 papers were excluded, including 234 that were not CHM studies, 142 that contained mixed interventions, 38 that aimed at single herb, herbal extracts or components, 305 that were not randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trials, and 13 that observed no outcome of interest. Ultimately, 14 eligible studies were selected in our study.

At some time or another all people that suffer from Parkinsons will have to tell their loved ones, friends and colleagues about their diagnosis and disease. Owing to the stigma and misunderstanding that society has of this illness, most people wait until they cant hide it anymore when the symptoms are becoming more pronounced and visible. As a consequence, they may have lived secretly with Parkinsons for many years, fearful of what will happen when people know. Perhaps fearful of losing their job, for example.

Of course, this is a vicious circle, people only tell their colleagues at the diseases later stages. So generally, we all only know the disease from that perspective. Having been diagnosed two years ago, I am still in what some Parkinsons practitioners call the honeymoon phase. Its relatively early in the progression and Im not shaking, so there is no visible evidence of my disease. .

The Reality Of Parkinsons Disease

There was always an air of integrity and rectitude about her.

Its a delicate situation. We want to praise Linda Ronstadtfor her music and her decency, but we dont want to be maudlin. Rather, its good to take a page from her realism. She knew the game for a long timewomen in rock get made out to be charmingly trashy or at least super-gamey when theyre really thoughtful and sensitive. In 1977, when Ronstadt was put on the cover of Time in a sexy dress and pose, she told the writer that the late Janis Joplinwas artificially encouraged to kinda cop a really tough attitude because rock and roll is kind of tough . She felt that wasnt quite authentic. In fact, Ronstadt said, Janis Joplin was lovely, shy, and very literate in real lifethe antithesis of the red hot mamma she was encouraged to be.

Kudos to Linda Ronstadt. It is tragic that we cannot hear her sing again, but we can take inspiration from the happy life she has created for herself and for her calm honesty. When this deservedly much-loved woman was asked if she had any stinkers among her songs, she said, with a laugh, Oh, my God, I have a litany of them! The calm self-deprecation projected a protective, and resonant, way of dealing with life, and that rueful modesty and pragmatism has taken her as far as her music has.

Linda Ronstadt: No Kiss

When, in 2013, she published her memoirSimple Dreams she refused to make it at all about her glammy former boyfriends and ex-fiances. She had a very long relationship with recent and twice California Governor Jerry Brown, was engaged to Jim Carrey, was engaged to Star Wars producer George Lucas, and dated everyone from J.D. Souther to Albert Brooks. Pause to take all of that in! Rather, she made the memoir about the music that gave her life such meaning.

She was so unpretentious, she surprised interviewers by opening the door herself.

Some years ago, she moved from L.A. to San Francisco, to live more simply. Surprisingly, she said shed never felt at home in L.A. She was so unpretentious, she surprised interviewers by opening the door herself: no assistant, no help. And, like many others , she quietly adopted two children as a single mother: in late 1990, a daughter, Mary Clementine, and in 1994 a baby boy, Carlos.

With modesty and irony, she wore her musical fame so lightly you hardly noticed. She was a wonderful dichotomy: so much fun but with an undercurrent of melancholy, says writer Aimee Lee Ball, who interviewed her for a womans magazine in the 90s and now hosts the websitewww.EatDarlingEat.net. She was wearing an extremely beautiful diamond bracelet, Ball remembers, and I remarked that perhaps it was a loving gift from a generous friend, `Are you kidding? she said, `I should only find somebody who would buy me things like this.

How Can It Help In Parkinson’s

The effects of herbal medicine in Parkinsons are largely untested with the exception of preliminary studies into Ayurveda – an ancient Indian healing system that combines a variety of interventions including herbal remedies.

Mucuna plants, which are used in Ayurveda herbal treatments, are known to contain levodopa – a key Parkinsons medication that increases dopamine levels in the brain and therefor improves the motor symptoms of the condition. Several studies into mucuna plants and Parkinsons have had positive results and some have even suggested that the plant might have advantages over conventional levodopa preparations in the long term management of Parkinsons. However, a rigorous clinical study into this is needed.

A qualified herbal practitioner will be able to advise on other remedies, for example nervine herbs to reduce tremors, or vascular dilators to relax rigid muscles. Some herbs may help with skin conditions.

But remember that natural does not mean harmless, and some herbal treatments can have serious side effects and interfere with Parkinsons medications. Always talk with your doctor before taking any herbal medicines.

Treating Parkinsons Disease With Dopamine Agonists

What I found most interesting in this article was the seemingly minimal positive result of Apomorphineis. I was curious as to how many patients are affected by a refractory off state to oral medications and how frequently these states would occur. With a rapid onset and a duration of relief only an hour or so its hard to believe that the benefit of the medication validates the side effects. Nausea occurs in most patients, and that has to be combated with a secondary medication. Are patients who have larger refractory periods self administering the medication hourly? If its being administered subcutaneously then the patient must be rotating spots on their bodies to avoid tissue damage, which seems taxing. Also if the medication is intended to be taken as a shot under the skin and it is dangerous to be injected into a vein then how easy is it to self-administer if the patient is experiencing tremors? It just seems like a very poor quality of treatment for a disease that is largely degenerative.
