    Researchers at the Kinsmen Laboratory of Neurological Research, University of British Columbia, tested the ingredients in coffee.

    • They discovered that a compound called quercetin is in fact the main neuro protective compound in coffee against Parkinsons disease as well as Alzheimers disease.

    How does it work?

    They found that the quercetin actually reduced the amount of damage to the DNA, and the fats and proteins in the brain cells. .

    What Other Things Help

    There are various ways to help a person with PDD. Speech therapy may help improve communication between people with PDD and others. Physical therapy may help strengthen and stretch stiff muscles and help to prevent falls.

    Research has shown that physical exercise helps to enhance brain health and improves mood and general fitness. A balanced diet, enough sleep and limited alcohol intake are other important ways to promote good brain health. In contrast to exploratory activity, two-way ANOVA analysis of the locomotor activity showed a delayed, but significant, effect of lead treatment on locomotor activity recorded during the last 10 min of each session as well as of lead treatment × sessions interaction . Compared to control rats, the significant decrease in locomotor activity has been observed only at day 56 of lead treatment .

    The 4 days of L-DOPA treatment did not improve either the exploratory or the locomotor activities measured in the actimeter in lead rats as well as in DSP-4 rats.

    What Happens In Pdd

    People with PDD may have trouble focusing, remembering things or making sound judgments. They may develop depression, anxiety or irritability.     Michael Richard Clifford, a 66-year-old retired astronaut living in Cary, N.C., learned before his third spaceflight that he had Parkinsons disease. He was only 44 and in excellent health at the time, and had no family history of this disabling neurological disorder.

    What he did have was years of exposure to numerous toxic chemicals, several of which have since been shown in animal studies to cause the kind of brain damage and symptoms that afflict people with Parkinsons.

    As a youngster, Mr. Clifford said, he worked in a gas station using degreasers to clean car engines. He also worked on a farm where he used pesticides and in fields where DDT was sprayed. Then, as an aviator, he cleaned engines readying them for test flights. But at none of these jobs was he protected from exposure to hazardous chemicals that are readily inhaled or absorbed through the skin.

    Now Mr. Clifford, a lifelong nonsmoker, believes that his close contact with these various substances explains why he developed Parkinsons disease at such a young age. Several of the chemicals have strong links to Parkinsons, and a growing body of evidence suggests that exposure to them may very well account for the dramatic rise in the diagnosis of Parkinsons in recent decades.

    What You Can Do

    We assessed participants cumulative exposure to lead using KXRF spectrometric estimates of lead concentration in their tibia and patella bones. Tibia bone is primarily cortical bone, in which lead has a slow turnover rateestimated at a half-life of over 40 years33making it a good surrogate for lifetime exposure. Patella bone is primarily trabecular bone lead in patella turns over at a faster rate, with a half-life of less than a decade. Together, these exposure measures can help determine the relevant exposure interval or duration.

    Thirty-minute bone lead measurements were taken with a KXRF instrument of the left tibia and patella, after each region had been washed with a 50% solution of isopropyl alcohol.34 The tibia was measured at mid shaftthe mid-point between the tibial plateau and the medial malleolus. The KXRF beam collimator was sited perpendicular to the flat bony surface of the tibia and at 30° in the lateral direction for the patella. Tibia and patella bone lead measurements with estimated uncertainties greater than 10 and 15 g/g bone, respectively, were excluded as these measurements usually reflect excessive subject movement during the measurement.
