Is There Scientific Proof That The Time Of Year Can Affect Pd Symptoms

Despite these potential reasons that PD symptoms might be more pronounced at different times of year, especially in the winter, with cold weather and shortened days, studies that have been conducted to directly study this issue have had mixed results.

In one initial study, patients motor scores, as defined by the Unified Parkinsons Disease Rating Scale, were compared in various months of the year, and no differences were found. Similarly, another study demonstrated that seasonal variation did not affect hallucinations in PD, with no exacerbation of the condition during the winter.

In a different study, however, prescriptions of PD medications were analyzed in the winter and summer months. More PD meds were prescribed in the winter months, suggesting that there is a variability in PD symptoms depending on the season. Another study looked at non-motor symptoms which suggested that patients blood pressure fluctuations, sleep, and hallucinations were worse in the winter months than in the summer.

Although results from research studies are not clear, it is certainly possible that some people with PD may experience a variability in their symptoms as it relates to the season. If this is the case for you, discuss this with your doctor. Adjustments in your treatment and lifestyle depending on the time of year may be a good solution to help you feel better year-round.

Central And Peripheral Effects Of Body Warming

Increases in skeletal muscle temperature have long been accepted to improve acute muscle force, power and contractility . Contrastingly, the inverse relationship between high core body temperature and muscle torque, muscle recruitment patterns, and voluntary activation is also documented . Importantly, however, these outcomes are most often viewed with a short-term lens, with limited understanding of the effects of time or repeated heat exposures on skeletal muscle in humans .

There are 8 main factors leading to Parkinsons. Some have a small effect. A couple are huge.

Together theyre essential in beating this horrible condition.

In truth, some of them my health-care center already acted on.

For example, they prescribed dopamine-enhancing drugs. For sure, I needed more dopamine.

I had tests and underwent occupational therapy. Again, good stuff it helped me manage my problems with balance, movement, stiffness.

If youre too cold, think about heating your body from the inside out. Warm drinks like tea and coffee can help you feel warmer, as can soups and stews. In fact, any warm food may help you feel warmer after you eat it. One drink to avoid: alcohol, which makes it easier for you to lose heat from your body.

Fortunately, its not at all difficult to do. Simple changes undo inflammation incredibly quickly. Which in turn halts the death of substantia nigra nerve cells.

Depression can be more pronounced in the winter months.

This is impacted by:

  • An increased number of hours in the dark.
  • Sleep quality may vary depending on the season because of the level of comfort with the ambient temperature and number of hours spent in the darkness.
  • Increased number of hours spent in the dark can impact hallucinations.

What to do: If the shorter days and lack of daylight are affecting your mood or sleep, talk with your doctor. You may be able to counteract the negative effects with light therapy, talk therapy, and possibly with antidepressant medications.

Keep Yourself And Your House Warm

Parkinson’s affects the nervous system, which controls body temperature, so people with Parkinson’s can be more sensitive to heat and cold.

There are a few simple things you can do to help keep your body temperature up:

  • Wrap up warm inside and outside the house.
  • Wear plenty of thin layers, rather than one thick one, and wear cotton, wool or fleecy synthetic fibres.
  • Wear a hat and bed socks in bed if you get cold at night.
  • Heat all the rooms you spend the day in. Or if you can’t keep all the rooms heated, try and keep one room heated for the day and your bedroom heated just before you go to bed.
  • Set your heating to come on just before you get up, and to turn off after you go to bed.

Treating Hyperhidrosis And Pd

Usually, lifestyle modification is the recommended method for managing excessive sweating in Parkinsons disease. Strategies include avoiding tight clothes, dressing in natural materials, wearing antiperspirant, and avoiding foods that cause you to sweat .

If you want to conceal your sweating, consider wearing clothes that dont show sweat marks and using deodorant, cologne, or perfume if it makes you feel more confident.

If you notice that you have been sweating a lot, make sure you drink water to avoid getting dehydrated. Dehydration can make you feel dizzy.

I Wanted Better Than This

Although I was getting worse very slowly I was still noticing it.

How Do Seasons Affect Parkinsons Disease Prescriptions

Vlog #117 – Temperature Regulation In Parkinson’s Disease

Not only do seasons affect the symptoms of Parkinsons disease, but they also affect medications prescribed to treat Parkinsons.

One study examined three elements of the weather and the impact on Parkinsons disease symptoms and medications: temperature, ultraviolet light, and relative humidity. The researchers believed that weather might cause Parkinsons patients to present with increased symptoms, leading to seasonal adjustments in levodopa equivalent dose .

Researchers sourced data from the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and Bureau of Meteorology in Australia using 23 years of monthly time. They found that the prescribed LED was 7.4% greater in January and 8% lower in July . Statistical analysis of linear and non-linear models showed that temperature was associated with prescription of Parkinsons medications for every 1% increase in temperature, there was a 0.18% and 0.13% increase in LED dose respectively.

Although temperature and ultraviolet light are highly correlated, neither model reported a statistically significant relationship between ultraviolet light and LED. However, scientific literature suggests that changes in ultraviolet light will have a delayed effect on Parkinsons disease because UV light is reported to affect Parkinsons through its synthesis of vitamin D.

We Have Choices About How This Condition Plays Out

In fact, medical scientists have proved that many people with a genetic disposition to this never get it.

While others with no genetic disposition at all still get full-on Parkinsons that ravages their mental health quickly and remorselessly.

Its not genetics. Its a basic illness with recognized causes.

Actually, there are three fantastic reasons:

First and foremost: I have tackled the loss of dopamine by working on the underlying cause of that loss.

Winter, spring, summer, fall can the season or weather really make a difference when it comes to your PD symptoms? It seems intuitive that very hot or very cold weather can impact a persons PD symptoms, potentially worsening pain or stiffness. When thinking about how the season or weather might impact PD symptoms, a number of potential factors come to mind. All of these issues could contribute to variability of PD symptoms.

How Can I Prevent A Heat Illness What Can I Do To Reduce My Risk Of Heat Illnesses

Heat illnesses are very preventable. Use the following simple steps to keep yourself from getting overheated:

  • Drink water every 15 minutes when working or exercising in a hot environment, even if youre not thirsty. If you need to be out in extreme heat , drink a total of two to four glasses of water each hour.
  • Take periodic rest breaks in the shade, a cool area or air-conditioned space.
  • When working or exercising outside in hot, humid weather, wear a hat and loose, lightweight, light-colored cotton clothing.
  • Do not drink alcohol or beverages that contain caffeine.
  • Avoid going outdoors for activities or exercise when the temperature and humidity are high.
  • Wear sunscreen. A sunburn reduces your bodys ability to cool down. It can also dehydrate you.
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses outside.
  • Avoid eating a hot, heavy meal.
  • Pace yourself. Rest often.
  • Monitor your urine output. If you urinate too much you could have a heat illness.

Remember that your body needs electrolytes, not just water. You can get electrolytes from common sports drinks, or powders you can add to your water. Choose an electrolyte drink or solution thats low in sugar.
