What Cause Is Dear To Your Heart

First off: Which charity is the right choice for you? For me, I have been a devoted supporter of the Parkinson Foundation of the National Capital Area. My dad was afflicted with the disease, and my family chose to support this organization because they help improve the quality of life for patients with Parkinsons disease right in our community.

Consumers should reflect on the causes that are close to their hearts to help guide their decisions. To focus your thoughts, consider your priorities: personal, work and community. Personal could be to a larger cause, such as cancer research or helping veterans. For work, many companies ask employees to donate to places such as United Way or Make-A-Wish organizations. Finally, a community could be a neighborhood clean-up, fundraiser or a church fund.

I had the pleasure of interviewingJohn L. Lehr, president and CEO of the Parkinsons Foundation.

Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series! Before we dive into the main focus of our interview, our readers would love to get to know you a bit better. Can you tell us a bit about your childhood backstory?

I am the youngest of six children, born in Chicago, but raised in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Being the youngest was great, as my parents were more relaxed, and I had the benefit of learning from the experiences of my older siblings. As a child, I played a lot of sports , and then gradually became interested in music, ultimately forming a band with my best friend. We played in the band through college, which was great fun.

What or who inspired you to pursue your career as a nonprofit leader? Wed love to hear the story.

In Your Opinion What Do You Think Are Some Of The Common Themes Of A Successful Nonprofit

You know, I think its important for any organization, regardless of size, to be very clear about what their vision is. Almost every nonprofit I know has a vision statement, which is your big aspirational view on what your organization is trying to do. In our case, its ultimately trying to find a cure for Parkinsons disease. We also know thats a huge undertaking, so in the meantime, we have our mission, which is to ensure that people are living well with Parkinsons, and ensuring that our community is maintaining their health, their quality of life, and that they are working through what is a very difficult journey with the resources to make the best of it.

Beyond just our mission and vision, we have what we call our guiding principles. In our case, its putting people with Parkinsons first in any decision we ever make. We ask ourselves, does this ultimately help people with Parkinsons? A question worth coming back to again and again is:

What are we doing today, with the resources we have, to advance our mission and ultimately move toward accomplishing our vision?

If you keep that front and center and keep that focus, it will keep you from making missteps and from chasing shiny objects. Im just always coming back to why, Why are we doing this? What is it all about?
