How Does Chiropractic Help With Parkinsons

Chiropractic care adjusts spinal misalignments. It removes irritation from the brainstem and other surrounding nerve cells. Once this takes place, communication can resume properly between the brain, spinal cord, and other nerves. As the symptoms of Parkinsons disease are combatted, the patients quality of life increases. Rigidity is another factor of PD. It is a muscle contraction, like a spasm, that lingers. Parkinsons patients experience this in their arms and legs. Chiropractic care sessions can significantly reduce rigidity that caused elevated pain, damaged posture, and prohibited daily activities.

Some instances of rigidity can be so extreme that a PD patient can only bend forward. They are not physically able to stand up straight or raise their head. It can prevent them from taking deep breaths and lying flat on their back. This leads to many other complications. Chiropractic care can lower the rigidity, improve the posture, and relieve other debilitating symptoms. Most neurologists and movement disorder specialists suggest that chiropractic care be done with medications not necessarily instead of them.

Chiropractic Adjustment For Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson

For more than a century, chiropractors have used spinal adjustments and other treatments to provide relief to patients with concerns ranging from back pain to menstrual cramps. As alternative medicine is becoming more mainstream in Western culture, people are now seeking chiropractic treatments for degenerative diseases such as Parkinsons, Alzheimers and multiple sclerosis. Although the treatments dont actually slow the progression of a disease like Parkinsons, patients can find reprieve from their symptoms and live an overall better quality of life.

Dr. Randall Davis, a chiropractor at the Center for Holistic Medicine , in Riverwoods/Deerfield, who also maintains a private practice, says that although there are several different chiropractic techniques, the overall goal is to restore the body to normal functioning. In general, chiropractic treatments involve the application of the mechanical forces to the spine, using the spine as a lever to facilitate the chiropractic adjustment. The chiropractor can use his or her hands or an instrument that also applies the specific forces to engage in the adjustment.

Chiropractor Dr. Kim Martin, DC, FASA, BCIM, CFMP, founder and clinical director of North Shore Health Solutions in Northbrook, has worked with Parkinsons patients for 16 years, and says that over a course of treatments, they can regain some of their strength.

After receiving chiropractic care, his Parkinsons symptoms decreased , his motor function improved, and his quality of life was positively affected.

Parkinsons Disease: Can It Be Prevented

Kalkstein Chiropractic Treats Parkinson’s Disease Patient

Presented by Dr. Marc Davis, Wellness Expert

Dr. Marc Davis

Unless you live under a rock, youve probably heard a lot about Parkinsons disease lately.; In recent years, this formerly obscure disorder has captured the media spotlight.; Much of this attention is due to high-profile personalities with the disorder, including actor Michael J Fox, United States Attorney Genera Janet Reno and boxing legend Mohammed Ali.

Parkinsons disease involves the degeneration of nerve cells in the brain region that control muscle movement .; Destruction of these cells causes a drop in levels of dopamine, a brain chemical that transmits information between nerve cells.; Insufficient coordination problems, frozen facial expression, speech impediments and tremors.; Rigidity, memory loss and depression are also associated with this condition.

Although scientists have yet to discover the exact cause of PD two out of 1,000 people are afflicted with the disease genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors all appear to play a role.

Parkinsons, like many others, affects members of every race and walk of life.; Although PD is more common in people over the age of 50, its afflicting younger adults at a rapidly escalating rate .

Is A Therapy Unsafe If Its Not Statutorily Regulated

Not necessarily. Some complementary therapies are regulated by statutory law, including osteopaths, chiropractors and art therapists. This means that, in the same way GPs and specialists have to register with the General Medical Council, these therapists must register with a statutory regulator before they can practise. One reason for statutory regulation is the level of risk linked to a particular therapy. For example, the government considered regulating acupuncture, but took the view that because acupuncturists were well self-regulated, it wasnt needed. ;

Parkinsons Disease And Chiropractic Care

Parkinsons disease has significant impact for the patients affected, their caregivers as well as society. Ultimately, the root cause of Parkinsons disease is the lack of dopamine in the brain which plays a vital role in telling your body how to move. Dopamine is also important for smooth muscle control, therefore when the nerve cells break down and cannot make dopamine, patients start to experience the signs and symptoms of Parkinsons. Parkinsonism refers to the set of signs and symptoms that are characterized by the following motor symptoms: rigidity, tremor, bradykinesia or postural instability.

Over time, with the growing and aging population, the prevalence of Parkinsons disease amongst Canadians is expected to double by 2031, increasing the incidence rate to 50%. Although there is no cure, there are a few options to help improve the quality of life and one of them is chiropractic care.

What role does chiropractic play?Research and chiropractic care with Parkinsons patients have concluded that there is a high influence of chiropractic on the symptoms of this disease. Ultimately, chiropractic care results in improvements in the function of the nervous system, restores motion and stimulates natural regulation of dopamine.

Walking, swimming, hiking, and aerobics are just a few activities that the patient could do both alone and with friends or a class.; Anyone who engages in exercise should switch up their routine between rhythmic, repetitive movements and random practice exercise.; These exercises are meant to relieve stiffness, reduce depression, and improve mobility, balance, posture, and gait.; Natural symptom relief and quality of life improvements are the easiest treatments that a PD patient can try.7

Improvement In Parkinsons Disease Symptoms Following Upper Cervical Chiropractic Adjustment

Parkinsons disease is a neurodegenerative brain disorder that progresses slowly in most people. Most peoples symptoms take years to develop, and they live for years with the disease.

In short, a persons brain slowly stops producing a neurotransmitter called dopamine. With less and less dopamine, a person has less and less ability to regulate their movements, body and emotions.

Parkinsons disease itself is not fatal. However, complications from the disease are serious; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention rated complications from PD as the 14th top cause of death in the United States.
