Episode 1: How Social Workers Can Help Ease Anxiety About The Unknown

Larry Sternberg MD

The news of a Parkinsons diagnosis can be overwhelming. So many questions arise, including how it will change the persons life, what lies ahead, and what to do first. Social workers can be a vital resource in helping a newly diagnosed person, care partner, and family navigate the road ahead, as well as provide ongoing support through the course of the disease. They are the health professionals who know and can coordinate many of the most helpful resources. Or as social worker Lance Wilson, LSW, C-SWHC, ASW-G, the education outreach coordinator for the Jefferson Health Comprehensive Parkinsons Disease and Movement Disorder Center in Philadelphia, a Parkinsons Foundation Center of Excellence, puts it, social workers are the Yellow Pages for health care, tying people into the resources they need. He says social workers can help put peoples minds at ease by assessing their needs and lining up professionals who can provide medical, mental health, spiritual services, and more.

Parkinson’s Exercise Classes At The Y

Parkinson’s Disease Exercises: Brain and Body

The YMCA of the Chesapeake offers Parkinsons related classes at several locations across the Eastern Shore with evidence-based programs focused on exercise as a way to slow the progression of the disease. Rock Steady Boxing, Pedaling for Parkinsons, and Aqua Exercise classes are being offered at many of the YMCA of the Chesapeake locations. These classes are hosted at YMCA facilities across the Shore-free of charge. Studies show that regular exercise is one of the key components in treating the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease

We are warriors and we have a warriors mentality. We fight to keep what is ours and we are not about to give up. We hit the heavy bag, speed bag, work with weights and other aerobic activities to promote fitness and confront Parkinsons Disease . The YMCA has been an important part of our fight to live. We have a place that cares about us, providing equipment, caring and knowledgeable instructors, reliable volunteers and a rich history of helping all people to regain control of their lives. Unfortunately, we will keep filling the classes with PD people but the Y will be there to challenge and uplift us. Anyone who has Parkinsons should sign-up. Roger Eareckson, Rock Steady participant.

AQUATIC EXERCISE FOR PD: PD Aqua Motion is a shallow-water class focusing on range of motion exercises, strength and flexibility. This class provides participants a low impact option to increase mobility.
