Houston Area Parkinson Societys Annual Awards Gala

The 2018 Annual Awards Gala benefitting Houston Area Parkinson Society will be Sunday, Oct. 21, 2018 at The Astorian. This years Event Chairs are Anne and Stuart Coco and Young Professional Chairs are Calia and Peter Pettigrew. Guests will enjoy a casual chic evening including a live and silent auction, music, cocktails and more.

Funds raised at the event will further HAPS mission to improve the quality of life for those affected by Parkinson’s disease through services, education and advocacy. For more than 40 years, HAPS has offered free therapeutic exercise and support groups, social services, education, transportation, emergency financial aid and subsidized respite care to families affected by Parkinsons in eight Houston-area counties. Proceeds from the Gala help fund these critical services.

This year HAPS is announcing a newly established award in tribute to George H. W. Bush in honor of the enormous contributions he has made to our society, and in recognition of his brave and optimistic approach to a life changed by vascular parkinsonism.

Houston Area Parkinson Society Profile And History

Houston Area Parkinson Society is a non-profit organization that serves, educates and advocates for those affected by Parkinson’s disease in our community. Founded in 1974, HAPS is one of the oldest independent, local Parkinson’s disease social service organizations in the United States. HAPS provides comprehensive services to eight counties in metropolitan Houston, with an estimated popula tion of more than 6 million people. HAPS offers numerous programs and services to the Parkinson’s community. Prior to the COVID-19 situation, HAPS offered more than 40 weekly exercise, water, music and speech therapy groups in addition to tai chi, tango, yoga, dance, singing and non-contact boxing classes. Post-COVID, HAPS offers robust virtual programming as well as in-person classes. All services are made available by HAPS to individuals with Parkinson’s and their care partners free of charge. Professionally facilitated support groups are offered at no cost to individuals living with Parkinson’s and their caregivers to share their experiences in a warm, friendly environment. In addition, HAPS offers free transportation services to and from physician visits. Social services, respite, emergency financial aid, education programs and a monthly newsletter are also available.

HAPS improves the quality of life for those affected by Parkinsons disease through services, education and advocacy. The online peer-to-peer support of the Smart Patients Parkinsons Disease community complements these resources by providing an engaging, safe space for People with Parkinsons and their care partners to talk online.
