What Is Parkinsons Disease
Parkinsons disease is a type of movement disorder that can affect the ability to perform common, daily activities. It is a chronic and progressive disease, meaning that the symptoms become worse over time. It is characterized by its most common of motor symptomstremors , stiffness or rigidity of the muscles, and slowness of movement but also manifests in non-motor symptoms including sleep problems, constipation, anxiety, depression, and fatigue, among others.

Two New Resources Will Enable APDA to Reach & Support More People With Parkinsons
NEW YORK, NY, July 6, 2022 The mission of the American Parkinson Disease Association is to provide the support, education, and research to help everyone impacted by Parkinsons disease live life to the fullest. However, it is challenging to meet this goal when everyone impacted by PD doesnt speak the same language, or have access to reliable wifi, or live near medical specialists, etc. Therefore, it is part of APDAs current three-year strategic plan to expand its reach to under-served, under-studied and under-represented communities in order to promote health equality and access to care, and provide much-needed education and support. Just one step in this direction is the launch of two newly transcreated resources, the APDA Parkinsons Disease Handbook, and the APDA Medical ID Card, both of which are now available in Simplified Chinese. They can be downloaded for free from the APDA website or free hard copies can be mailed to your home.
The APDA Parkinsons Disease Handbook has been designed to provide a strong overview of PD, including:
- an explanation of the disease
- common symptoms
- available treatments for disease management
- practical tips on caring for someone with Parkinsons
- research currently underway

Who Does The Disease Affect
There are an estimated 1 million people in the U.S. living with Parkinsons disease and more than 10 million people worldwide. Most people who develop the symptoms of Parkinsons disease do so sometime after the age of 50, but Parkinsons disease can affect younger persons as well. Approximately 10% of Parkinsons diagnoses occur before age 50these diagnoses are called Early Onset Parkinsons disease.

How Does Parkinsons Disease Affect The Brain
Explaining the Science Behind Parkinsons Disease
What makes Parkinsons disease distinctive from other movement disorders is that cell loss occurs in a very specific region of the brain called the substantia nigra . The nerve cells, or neurons, in this region actually appear dark under a microscope .
Those dark neurons produce a specific type of neurotransmitter called dopamine. The neurotransmitter dopamine helps to regulate movement. This loss of dopamine is the reason that many treatments for Parkinsons Disease are intended to increase dopamine levels in the brain. Future research will hopefully tell us more about alpha-synuclein. Learn more about APDA research initiatives here.
In addition to decreases in dopamine and the cells that make dopamine, you might also read or hear about alpha-synuclein . We do not yet know what this protein does in the healthy brain, but in Parkinsons disease it clumps up in what are called Lewy bodies. Researchers believe that alphasynuclein build-up contributes to the cause of Parkinsons disease and that it may be possible to develop new treatments based on this idea.

NEW YORK, NY The American Parkinson Disease Association is proud to host the APDA Long Island Optimism Walk on Saturday, October 1, at Marjorie R. Post Community Park in Massapequa, NY*. There are approximately one million people living with Parkinsons disease in the United States 65,000 of which are right here in New York with more being diagnosed every day. This year, special guest Meredith Garofalo, Senior Meteorologist from News 12 New York/Long Island will be joining to help emcee the event.
With 16 events across the country, the Optimism Walk series brings thousands of participants together to support APDAs mission to help every person impacted by PD live life to the fullest. By raising funds and awareness, every participant in the APDA Long Island Optimism Walk is stepping up and stepping out to make a difference for those living with the disease today and to push for answers that will ultimately make PD a thing of the past.
What is an Optimism Walk? The Long Island Optimism Walk is a family-friendly fundraising event that offers a short walk of up to 1.5 miles and other activities including educational opportunities, raffles, sponsor activities, music and most importantly, the chance to bond with others who are similarly connected. It is perfect for people with PD, their friends, family, coworkers, and care partners anyone who wants to step up and help put an end to this disease.
