Nerve cells, or neurons, are responsible for sending and receiving nerve impulses or messages between the body and the brain. Try to picture electrical wiring in your home. An electrical circuit is made up of numerous wires connected in such a way that when a light switch is turned on, a light bulb will beam. Similarly, a neuron that is excited will transmit its energy to neurons that are next to it.

Neurons have a cell body with branching arms, called dendrites, which act like antennae and pick up messages. Axons carry messages away from the cell body. Impulses travel from neuron to neuron, from the axon of one cell to the dendrites of another, by crossing over a tiny gap between the two nerve cells called a synapse. Chemical messengers called neurotransmitters allow the electrical impulse to cross the gap.

This system controls some of the bodys autonomic functions such as digestion, heart rate, blood pressure and breathing. What Medications Are Used To Treat Parkinsons Disease

Medications are the main treatment method for patients with Parkinsons disease. Your doctor will work closely with you to develop a treatment plan best suited for you based on the severity of your disease at the time of diagnosis, side effects of the drug class and success or failure of symptom control of the medications you try.

Patients often ask what stage of PD that they are in. I then explain the following as to why that is not an important issue.

Staging in most diseases is important in predicting how long people will live or how well they can function. This is particularly important in cancer and heart disease. Different cancers have different systems for staging as experience has accumulated to distinguish how ominous it is to have cancer spread to local lymph nodes, or distant nodes, above the diaphragm, or below the diaphragm, in the bone marrow or not, etc. So stage 2b in one disease may have a very different prognosis than stage 2b in another form of cancer, but each will be associated with a certain chance of survival for a specified period.

This is not true for staging in PD. The staging system we use is based on a famous paper written by Margaret Hoehn and Melvin Yahr in 1967. Their paper was the first large study of the effect of LDopa on disease progression. In order to assess how the disease progressed, they had to develop a system to rate the severity. It wouldnt do, for example, to say mild,moderate, or severe, as the readers would want to know what they meant by these terms.

Several other members mentioned that cold temperatures can cause or worsen pain related to Parkinsons disease. I get cold very easily and I shiver, a member wrote. Because I am stiff it actually hurts to be cold. Others agreed, My back and neck are excruciatingly painful, more so than usual.

Cold weather can also exacerbate Parkinsons tremors. One member commented, I have found that my shivering to stay warm makes my tremors worse. Another MyParkinsonsTeam member added, I also struggle with the cold now. It brings on my tremor, so I always have to stay warm.
