Does Tce Cause Parkinsons Disease

Previously, a causal link between TCE exposure and Parkinsons disease could not be established because Parkinsons typically develops many years after the exposure takes place.

However, a study conducted by the University of Kentucky in 2012 found a strong link between occupational exposure to TCE and a greater risk of developing Parkinsons disease later in life.

While prior research has indicated a link between TCE exposure and Parkinsons disease, the current findings are the first to report a statistically significant association a more than six-fold increased risk.

While this is a staggering increase in risk of Parkinsons disease, the study also provides some hope for improving the chances for people who have been exposed to TCE.

Study lead author Samuel M. Goldman stated, Our findings, as well as prior case reports, suggest a lag time of up to 40 years between TCE exposure and onset of Parkinsons, providing a critical window of opportunity to potentially slow the disease process before clinical symptoms appear.

Tce Found In Drinking Water

Besides factories and Superfund sites, TCE is also found in drinking water supplies that rely on contaminated groundwater sources. Because of its moderate water solubility, TCE in soil has the potential to migrate into groundwater, according to the EPA.

However, the EPA considers it safe for TCE to be present in drinking water at a maximum concentration of five parts per billion. One of the most noted investigations into TCE in drinking water was launched in the 1980s when two water supply systems on the U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina were found to be contaminated with TCE and perchloroethylene, a liquid widely used for dry cleaning fabrics and metal degreasing. It is believed that people were exposed to up to 3,400 times the level of contaminants permitted by safety standards.

Briana de Miranda, a toxicologist who studies TCE at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine, says: We are under-sampling how many people are exposed to TCE. Its probably a lot more than we guess.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ray Dorsey, a neurologist at the University of Rochester Medical Center and author of the book, Ending Parkinsons Disease, foresees a future Parkinsons epidemic, including in the United States where the number of people with the disease has increased 35 percent in the last 10 years.

Were on the tip of a very, very large iceberg, Dorsey says. We think over the next 25 years it will double again.

    Common chemical solvents significantly increase the risk of Parkinsons Disease, an international study on twins has found for the first time.

    This is the first report of this specific exposure being related to Parkinsons Disease in a population-based study, Dr. Connie Marras, a neurologist at the University Health Network and the University of Toronto, told the Star.

    Ninety-nine pairs of identical and fraternal twins, all of them part of a study group composed of World War II veterans, were examined for lifetime hobbies and jobs. They were in the study because one twin in each set had Parkinsons. Twins are also studied because they have identical or similar gene structures which can eliminate gene risk factors.

    Experts then determined what their exposure would be to six solvents, three of which have been used extensively worldwide for decades.

    The most significant link was found with trichloroethylene, or TCE, used as a dry cleaning and degreasing agent and in common household products such as typewriter correction fluid, glue, paints, carpet cleaners and spot removers.

    There are also suspicious signals for PERC and carbon tetrachloride, said Marras. We need another study with a larger sample.

    Parkinsons Disease is a baffling, incurable brain disorder that causes tremors and degenerates muscle coordination.

    And because the men studied came from all walk of life, the results are valid across the general population.

    “This is the first time a population-based study has confirmed case reports that exposure to TCE may increase a person’s risk of developing Parkinson’s disease,” said study author Samuel Goldman, MD, with the Parkinson’s Institute in Sunnyvale, California, and a member of the American Academy of Neurology. “TCE was once a popular industrial solvent used in dry cleaning and to clean grease off metal parts, but due to other health concerns the chemical is no longer widely used.”

    For the study, researchers obtained job histories from 99 pairs of twins in which only one of the twins had Parkinson’s disease. All of the twins were men and identified from the World War II-Veterans Twins Cohort study. Scientists used twins in the study because they are genetically identical or very similar and provide an ideal population for evaluating environmental risk factors.

    Other Chemicals That Can Cause Parkinsons Disease

    Paraquat, an herbicide that has been used in everything from commercial agriculture to home groundskeeping, has also been linked to an increased risk for Parkinsons disease.

    Paraquat became a popular alternative to Roundup weed killer after Roundup became associated with non-Hodgkins lymphoma and other cancers.
