About Parkinsons Disease Health Equity Fund

Parkinsons disease is a chronic and progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects movement, which belongs to a group of conditions called motor system disorders, resulting from the loss of dopamine-producing brain cells. The primary symptoms are tremors or trembling in the hands, arms, legs, jaw and face stiffness of the limbs and trunk slowness of movement and impaired balance and coordination which interfere with daily activities. Parkinsons usually affects people over the age of 60.

Our Health Equity Funds were developed to get assistance to those people and places who need it the most. Developed using the CDCs Social Vulnerability Index and CDC Disease Incidence data, our Health Equity Funds serve people living in 220 counties across the United States that have been identified by the CDC as having the highest social vulnerability scores and are burdened with high rates of chronic diseases. The Health Equity Funds are designed to specifically provide support to eligible patients living in one of the 220 counties covered by the funds, which is verified using the zip code of the patients home address. All other eligibility requirements, and fund operation, are the same as our general funds.

What We Aim To Solve

Parkinson

When a doctor prescribes a medication to a patient, nothing should stand in the way of the patient receiving that medication. Removing barriers to treatment access is the work of The Assistance Fund, an independent charitable patient assistance organization. We help patients and families who have been diagnosed with life-threatening, chronic, and rare diseases through financial assistance for their copayments, coinsurance, deductibles, and other health-related expenses.

The Impact Of Epilepsy On Canadians Survey

The first of its kind in Canada, The Impact of Epilepsy on Canadians survey was conducted to provide an in-depth look at how Canadian adults living with epilepsy are impacted by the disorder in terms of their quality of life, health, and access to care and treatment. Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders affecting approximately 300,000 Canadians, or one in 100. Despite its wide reach, there is currently a lack of awareness and knowledge about epilepsy, which often leads to social isolation, work barriers and relationship issues. The general public and all levels of government require a better understanding of the impact of epilepsy to ensure that the correct and best care and support can be provided to those living with the disorder.

How Does Rytary Work

It appears that Parkinsons disease is caused by insufficient production of dopamine in the brain. DOPA, an enzyme found in nerve tissue, is a precursor to dopamine. The levodopa and carbidopa that are combined in Rytary work through two different mechanisms:

  • Levodopa is converted into dopamine in the brain through a process that activates the DOPA enzyme.
  • Carbidopa inhibits DOPA to offset the negative side effects caused by the conversion of levodopa into dopamine. It also increases the quantity of levodopa available to cross the blood-brain barrier and enter the brain.

Under Medicaid, some family members can be paid as caregivers.

Parkinsons Programs « Friedberg JCC

Through the VA Health Care program and their pensions, the VA offers veterans multiple avenues of assistance with medical equipment, assistive technology and home modification. The avenue best pursued depends on whether or not the individual with Parkinsons Disease was exposed to herbicides during their military service. For those individuals not exposed, they are most likely to receive assistance from the Aid and Attendance pension benefit, VD-HCBS or the HISA Grant. For those veterans with PD who were exposed, VA Health Care will cover the cost of much assistive technology and medical equipment.Another option for veterans comes not from the VA but from a non-profit organization with a veteran-specific program called Heroes at Home. This program is intended to assist in making home modifications and typically provides free labor for modifications but does not cover the cost of materials.
