What Immelt Did Not Do

GE CEO Immelt Stepping Down, Flannery To Take Over Role ...

According to Markopolos report, GE should have been accounting for its unsustainable obligations with reserve funds back in 2012. The whistleblower claims General Electric didnt acknowledge them until new management came in. This created a $15 billion hit that had to be spread out over seven years.

This was during the time when then-CEO Jeff Immelt was transforming GE from the banking-and-entertainment giant that predecessor Jack Welch had built into an industrial enterprise. This was highlighted by the $10 billion acquisition of French power and grid business Alstom in 2015. Analysts called the Alstom deal brilliant but it eventually became a disaster. General Electrics GE Power has been dragging the rest of the company down ever since.

But the companys refusal to account for policy costs is worse, Markopolos writes. GE is stuck with reinsurance on policies written in the twentieth century, long before the real costs were known. They have just $1,133 of premium, on average, 70% of which cover lifetime benefits for customers whose average age is now 75.

Markopolos also claims that GE is hiding $9.1 billion in losses on its acquisition of what is now Baker Hughes , which the company closed on in June 2017. This was just four months before Immelts sudden retirement that October. Markopolos estimates GE stocks current ratio of assets to liabilities at 0.67, once Baker Hughes numbers are taken out of the balance sheet.

In Rare Move Retired Supreme Court Justice John Stevens Says Kavanaugh Shouldn’t Be Confirmed

January 7, 2021

In a highly unusual move, retired Supreme Court Justice John Stevens on Thursday urged the Senate to reject Brett Kavanaugh.

Speaking at a retiree event in Boca Raton, Fla., the 98-year-old Stevens said Kavanaughs tearful testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee last week should disqualify him from serving on the highest court of the land.

I thought he had the qualifications to sit on the Supreme Court, Stevens, a lifelong Republican, told the crowd. Ive changed my views for reasons that have really no relationship to his intellectual ability or his record as a federal judge…but I think his performance during the hearings ultimately changed my mind.

Stevens floated his anti-Kavanaugh opinion in response to a question from Palm Beach Post columnist Frank Cerabino.

Former and current justices typically avoid commenting publicly on contemporaneous events in order to maintain the high courts separation from everyday politics.

But Stevens, who retired in 2010 after 35 years on the Supreme Court, couldnt hold back over what he saw as Kavanaughs overt partisanship while testifying before the Judiciary Committee about allegations that he sexually assaulted at least three women.

He has demonstrated a potential bias involving enough potential litigants before the court that he would not be able to perform his full responsibilities, Stevens said. Senators should really pay attention to it.

Who Is Robert Mueller

He is the rare Washington figure who is revered by both Republicans and Democrats. He was a top U.S. attorney in San Francisco and Boston and was appointed in 2001 by President George W. Bush to serve a 10-year term as FBI director. He served 12 years because President Obama asked him to stay on and Congress approved.

Bob Mueller is a nearly perfect choice for this job, said Washington lawyer Walter Dellinger. He is a straight-down-the-middle guy, and thats exactly what you want in this circumstance.

Column: Contrasting Styles Messages Give Voters Clear Choice In Da Race

You would be hard pressed to find more divergent opponents on the San Diego County June ballot than in the race for district attorney.

One is the countys prosecutor: the insider, establishment candidate with nearly three decades of experience who has risen through the ranks to the top of her profession, making changes to the DAs office along the way.

The other is a public defender: the outsider with more than a decade on the job who has become part of a national movement to elect district attorneys who believe the U.S. criminal justice system is stacked against minorities and the underprivileged and must be overhauled.

Both claim the mantle of reformer in vastly different ways.

District Attorney Summer Stephan is viewed by many as the heir apparent to former DA Bonnie Dumanis and the movers and shakers in town would like to make that a certainty.

Deputy Public Defender Geneviéve Jones-Wright is the choice not only of San Diego progressives but criminal justice reform advocates Shaun King and possibly billionaire George Soros.

Both appear whip-smart with campaign styles as different as their backgrounds. Jones-Wright is fiery and goes for the roundhouse political haymaker Stephan is low-key and delivers stinging jabs to potentially set up a knockout punch.

If you define reformer in a non-political sense. . . then I would be the ultimate reformer, Stephan said. Im constantly the one driving change in the office.

With Single Gene Insertion Blind Mice Regain Sight

by University of California – Berkeley

It was surprisingly simple. University of California, Berkeley, scientists inserted a gene for a green-light receptor into the eyes of blind mice and, a month later, they were navigating around obstacles as easily as mice with no vision problems. They were able to see motion, brightness changes over a thousandfold range and fine detail on an iPad sufficient to distinguish letters.

The researchers say that, within as little as three years, the gene therapydelivered via an inactivated viruscould be tried in humans who’ve lost sight because of retinal degeneration, ideally giving them enough vision to move around and potentially restoring their ability to read or watch video.

“You would inject this virus into a person’s eye and, a couple months later, they’d be seeing something,” said Ehud Isacoff, a UC Berkeley professor of molecular and cell biology and director of the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute. “With neurodegenerative diseases of the retina, often all people try to do is halt or slow further degeneration. But something that restores an image in a few monthsit is an amazing thing to think about.”

About 170 million people worldwide live with age-related macular degeneration, which strikes one in 10 people over the age of 55, while 1.7 million people worldwide have the most common form of inherited blindness, retinitis pigmentosa, which typically leaves people blind by the age of 40.

Ge’s Fossil Fuels Disaster Gets Uglier

General Electric remains mired in a cash crisis — caused in large part by a …

General Electric remains mired in a cash crisis — caused in large part by a bad bet on fossil fuels.

Profit in GE’s power division crashed by 88% during the final three months of 2017, the embattled company said on Wednesday.

GE also disclosed that the Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating the company’s recent insurance losses and accounting tactics.

The steep decline in power was driven by slumping orders for giant turbines and generators used in coal and natural gas plants. GE also took a hit from a previously announced restructuring that will include 12,000 job cuts.

GE’s power problems were sparked by years of bad deal making, especially under former CEO Jeff Immelt. Rather than invest heavily in renewable energy, GE doubled down on fossil fuels in 2015 by acquiring Alstom’s power business, which makes coal-fueled turbines. GE has admitted that the $9.5 billion deal, its largest industrial deal ever, has suffered from the rise of solar and other renewable energy.

John Flannery, the new CEO, said during a conference call that power is an “important franchise going through a difficult period.” He warned market challenges will continue.

The power slump contributed to GE’s overall weaker-than-expected results during the fourth-quarter.

GE lost $9.6 billion last quarter, mostly because of its financial arm and the tax overhaul.

My Favorite Lupus Story

In the early 1990s, long after Flannery OConnor died, a neurologist at the University of Rochester, Robert Ader and a pediatrician collaborator, Karen Olness , were contacted by a desperate mother. Her daughter had lupus, which had specifically keyed in on one of her blood clotting factor proteins, mimicking hemophilia, and if they didnt do something before the girl started menstruating, she was in danger of bleeding to death. The only other option was removing her uterus, or scarring the inside of it so there was no lining to shed every month.

I wrote about their experimental approach to saving her life in this column for the Intergalactic Medicine Show. Bill Moyers also talked to all the people involved in this clip for his series Healing and the Mind, which I didnt know about at the time. Both the patient and Bob Ader are dead now, but Ive been wanting to talk to Karen Olness about whether hypnosis might amplify the kinds of placebo effects they took advantage in their experiment. If this would interest you, too, please let me know.

This is, for better or worse, how my brain works.
