Michael J. Fox Rediscovers His Optimism: âThere Is No Other Choiceâ | Sunday TODAY
The Michael J. Fox Show

The Michael J. Fox Show is an American sitcom television series starring Michael J. Fox, that aired on NBC in the United States from September 26, 2013, to January 23, 2014, as part of the 201314 American television season. Fox made his regular return to television for the first time since he was on ABC‘s Spin City. It was his second NBC series, as he appeared on that network’s sitcom Family Ties from 1982 to 1989 as Alex P. Keaton.

On February 5, 2014, NBC cancelled the series due to the 2014 Winter Olympics. A representative for NBC later stated the show “it’s not cancelled. We are looking for a place on the schedule after April 3.” Despite this, the remaining episodes never aired in the U.S. and, on May 10, 2014, NBC officially canceled the show after one season. The remaining seven episodes were aired in Australia on Nine Network from March 12 to April 23, 2014.

Fox Remains Optimistic That There Will Be A Cure

From the start, his attitude about his diagnosis was clear and became his trademark: optimism mixed with reality.

That fall, he went back to Spin City, but eventually left after two more seasons. One of the reasons I left Spin City was that I felt my face hardening, he told;theNew York Times Magazine. My movements were constricted. If you watch episodes from the last couple of seasons, youll see I would anchor myself against a desk or the wall. Eventually, it was too burdensome.

Knowing his limits and knowing where to channel his energy became his priority. By the end of that year, he launched the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research and poured all his efforts into its work.

Despite returning to acting and writing three best-selling books , his true purpose now remains on his foundation. I still believe in a cure, he told The New York Times Magazine.

Fox has been known to pick up a guitar at his foundations annual benefit and reprise the iconic Back to the FutureJohnny B. Goode scene with Coldplays Chris Martin even joining him in 2013. After all, Fox is a true rockstar.;

The Actor Wasn’t Initially Open About His Parkinson’s Diagnosis

Michael J. Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991, but he stayed quiet about it for seven years, only telling people who needed to know . Finding new career success with the film “The American President,” Fox returned to television with the sitcom “Spin City.” This, however, meant talking about his diagnosis with the network and production company. “I said it could get very bad or not get bad,” he recalled to People in 1998. “They said, ‘Let’s go!'”; It would be two seasons into the show’s run before Fox told his costars about his condition.

It’s understandable that someone with Parkinson’s would feel anxiety and not want to talk about the disease. The European Parkinson’s Disease Association’s website explains that it is common for someone with this disease to experience mild to severe general social anxiety in which they are worried about being judged. And, unfortunately, that fear can exacerbate some of their symptoms like shaking. But beyond this, research shows that the way Parkinson’s disease can change a person’s brain chemistry may alone bring on feelings of anxiety. In addition, someone with Parkinson’s might develop akathisia, a different condition which mimics anxiety in that the person is uncontrollably restless.

Ultimately, Fox came to an important realization: To properly accept having Parkinson’s, he needed to be open about it. This turning point for Fox, however, meant he had to make significant changes in his life.

But despite his recent challenges, the star says the love, support and laughter of his family has helped him to regain his positivity.

With Parkinsons patients, the hardest reaction is acceptance, comprehending why should I accept this, or surrender to it.

If you accept something it doesnt mean you cant ever change it, you can find new ways to look at life, you can fill in the blanks … theres other room for you to thrive in, he said.

My wife is great because she knows me so well.

Shes very funny and my son and my daughters are all funny – even my father was funny.

I always figured if someone called heads and flipped a coin a hundred times thered be a few on heads … so Ive always viewed myself that way, Fox said.

The star was appearing on Sunrise to promote his new memoir, No Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality.

His two previous bestselling memoirs, Lucky Man and Always Looking Up, dealt with how he came to terms with his illness.

Michael J Fox Retired From Acting A Second Time

Despite returning to the small screen on TV shows like “Scrubs,” “Boston Legal,” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” after his initial retirement, Michael J. Fox announced in November 2020 that he was entering a second retirement from acting. “There are reasons for my lapses in memorization be they age, cognitive issues with the disease, distraction from the constant sensations of Parkinson’s, or lack of sensation because of the spine but I read it as a message, an indicator,” he wrote in his 2020 memoir .

When thinking of Parkinson’s disease, many may picture difficulty walking or shaking. However, as the Parkinson’s Foundation;explained, there are also cognitive issues such as “difficulty remembering information or have trouble finding the right words when speaking.” In addition, language difficulties connected to Parkinson’s can manifest themselves during times of stress or when under pressure . Other non-movement symptoms can include difficulty making decisions and maintaining focus especially in a group situation, as well as a general slowing down in one’s thinking.

Even though Fox may have put acting behind him, he remains hopeful that he might find himself in the spotlight again while simultaneously accepting it may never happen. “That could change, because everything changes. But if this is the end of my acting career, so be it,” he wrote.

Michael J Fox Opens Up About Acting With Parkinsons

Two years after the accident, Fox is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which has become the world’s preeminent organization for Parkinson’s disease research.

“We started the foundation literally with nothing,” he said. “We got the best people on it doing the best work they can, as quickly as they can.

“We’ve been responsible for 17 active therapies that are now being used that were never thought of before. We funded $1 billion in research. This is our 20th year. If we knew it was gonna be 2020, we would’ve started a year earlier or a year later because this year really blows,” he quipped.

Fox also shares in his new memoir that he’s retiring from acting due to the effects of living with Parkinson’s disease.

He previously retired at 40, and he threw his energy into his foundation, but he later returned to acting, guest-starring on “The Good Wife” and “Rescue Me,” the latter of which earned him his fifth Emmy.

After ruling out everything from childhood hockey accidents to film stunts, he realized the truth. Theres just that thing fate, he explained to People. Youre the guy it touches.

Alex Echo: Artist Reveals ‘shock’ Over Parkinson’s Diagnosis

What is Parkinson’s Disease?

Artist Alex Echo has described his “shock” at being diagnosed with Parkinson’s, which has forced him to give up most of his painting work.

Echo’s abstract artworks have been bought by Robert Downey Jr, Oprah Winfrey and Cindy Crawford.

The disease has severely limited his painting, but Echo says digital art has given him a new creative outlet.

“Parkinson’s has impacted my work as a painter because my level of skill has diminished so much,” he tells BBC News.

The three main symptoms of Parkinson’s disease are involuntary shaking, known as tremors, slow movement and stiff and inflexible muscles. It can also lead to a loss of balance and trouble with sleeping.

“I’m far more creative now as a digital artist, and it’s so much fun,” Echo says. “I feel invigorated and alive. So my creativity hasn’t changed, but the medium has changed.”

Michael J Fox And The Parkinsons Cluster

By Murray Bourne, 13 Sep 2007

Here is another unusual disease cluster. Michael J. Fox most likely contracted Parkinsons disease in the late 1970s while working on a TV series in his native Canada. Intriguingly, 4 other members of the crew also contracted Parkinsons.

According to this NY Times article, Parkinsons Clusters Getting a Closer Look:

The four people worked together from 1976 to 1980, when it is possible that the disease began in all of them.

Is There Science Behind This

Science, yes. Magic, no. This method requires regular practice if you want to make lasting, long-term changes to the ways that you think and feel. The good news is that both guided imagery and bilateral stimulation are widely practiced and well-established practices. However, I recommend that if you are still struggling after repeated listening, you find a qualified trauma therapist to continue the work you have already started.

In people with PD, the brain cells that make dopamine don’t function normally, which causes trouble with body movement. Some of the classic symptoms of the disease are “rigidity, stiffness, stooped or forward-leaning posture, and shuffling gait,” says J. William Langston, M.D., the founder, chief executive officer , and scientific director of The Parkinson’s Institute in Sunnyvale, CA. Like over one million Americans, Michael J. Fox has PD.

Called “the most credible voice on Parkinson’s disease research in the world” by The New York Times, MJFF is the world’s largest private funder of PD research, having contributed more than $270 million toward their goal of finding a cure. Michael J Fox Broke His Arm And Lost His Optimism

It was the summer of 2018 and the year had already been rough for Michael J. Fox. Now, in addition to managing a progressive disease, he was recovering from spinal surgery and starving for a little time to himself, according to the CBC. But no sooner did he get his wish when he slipped on a tile in his kitchen and fell on his arm, shattering it. Alone and unable to get help, Fox remembered at that moment, he was tired of his “when life hands you lemons, make lemonade” attitude about his condition. “That was the point where I went ‘I’m out of the freakin’ lemonade business,'” he told the CBC. “‘I can’t put a shiny face on this. This sucks, and who am I to tell people to be optimistic?'”

Fractures are not uncommon among people with Parkinson’s. According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, the disease can cause changes to a person’s skeleton, including lower bone density. In fact, if a person with Parkinson’s does less walking and other exercises in which their skeleton needs to support their weight, they run the risk of weaker bones, increasing their chances of bone fractures if they fall. In Fox’s case, as he detailed to the CBC. his arm was so badly broken that it needed to be rebuilt. And what about his optimism? That too would need some rebuilding.
