My Wife Has Parkinsons Is A Firm/orthopaedic Mattress Is Best

My wife has Parkinons. I guess a firm/orthopedic mattres is best. What is your advice?

Dear Peter,

Thank you for your enquiry.; We would only recommend a firm mattress if your wifes comfort preferences were for a firmer feel and if she is a front sleeper. We do not sell orthopaedic mattresses as a mattress that is too firm would be as bad if not worse than a mattress that was too soft.; I have included some links to articles that cover these mattresses.

Getting the correct support is the most important aspect, this is provided by the spring tension and is determined solely by an individuals body weight.

Bodyweight
Available in Bespoke Products Soft

In order to determine which of our models would be most suitable for your wife, we would need to take into consideration the type and feel of her current bed and why this is no longer suitable for her.; Her comfort preferences and sleeping habits play a big part in determining whether a soft, medium or firm mattress would be more suitable. For instance, if she sleeps on her side then a firm mattress would cause pressure pain in her shoulders, hips and knees whereas if she sleeps on her front then a soft mattress would make her back over arch and cause lower back pain. Knowing this information would help us to tailor a recommendation to her individual needs.

I hope this helps and if you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact the office where one of our friendly team will be happy to help.

Kind Regards

Best 8 Beds and Mattresses for Parkinsons Patients in ...

Most of us know someone with it. Some of us are afflicted with it. Others of us will be diagnosed with it. It is Parkinson’s, a progressive condition with varying degrees of debilitation. Some of the recognizable symptoms are trembling hands and difficulty in coordination. Other symptoms may not be easily seen by others, such as restless leg syndrome, night sweats, stiffness in sleep, and incontinence.

With the help of healthcare professionals, Thomashilfen designed a Thevo Mobility therapy mattress to help persons with Parkinson’s sleep well. ThevoCalm is the Thomashilfen mattress for Parkinson’s care. It is distributed in the United States by Thomashilfen North America.

Each of the conditions addressed by a Thevo Mobility therapy mattress affects sleep differently, so in each of these mattresses, support is tailored for these special needs. Persons with Parkinson’s need more stability, so the ThevoCalm is engineered to be firmer overall.

Beginning at the bottom, the carbon fiber shock absorbing ParkinsonSuspension mounts are firmer than the mounts in most other Thevo models. While some give a “soft” response, in ThevoCalm it is “firm” support.

Though not stated in descriptions, the firmness of the underlying support of the WingSuspension system is likely also firmer in ThevoCalm. This indicates that the stiffness of this component in each Thevo mattress model likely varies to address specific needs.

How Does Age Affect Sleep

When choosing the best mattress for seniors, its important to consider how age affects sleep. A common belief is that our sleep needs decline as we age. While its true that the amount of time we need to sleep each night declines from infancy onwards, this trend levels off once we reach adulthood.

That means seniors still need around eight hours of sleep for optimal health. However, the process of aging introduces some unique challenges that can make it more difficult to get the right amount of sleep each night. So how exactly does age affect sleep?

While the amount of sleep we need stays the same during adulthood, our sleep patterns change as we age. Age-related changes in sleep patterns include:

In addition to the natural changes in sleep patterns, seniors are also more likely to suffer from health conditions that disturb restful sleep.

  • Arthritis: This chronic condition can cause stiffness, swelling, and pain in the joints.
  • Sleep apnea: Older adults are more likely to suffer from sleep apnea, a sleep disorder in which breathing stops and starts throughout the night and affects the quality of sleep.
  • Neurological and cognitive conditions: Alzheimers disease, Parkinsons disease, and other forms of dementia have been linked to higher rates of insomnia, sleep apnea, and other sleep disorders.
  • Diabetes and prostate problems: These and other conditions that seniors commonly experience can lead to frequent nighttime urination, thereby interrupting regular sleep.

When Is The Best Moment To Buy A New Mattress

Movement Tips for People with Parkinson’s Disease

There are cheap mattress deals all year round leading mattress maker Nectar, for example, has been running its best-ever mattress offer for over a year now. However, some months may offer more discounts than others.

In November, Black Friday and CyberMonday mattress deals offer the lowest prices, while Presidents Day mattresses sales are the most popular. This is when people begin spending again slowly after the January lull. Retailers attempt to incite interest by offering strong discounts and prices that are often just as low than Black Friday. Best Mattress For Parkinson Patients

The Memorial Day mattress sales are another key time to buy a new mattress, as retailers look to make way for newer models launching over the summer by discounting older stock. You can get as many discount mattresses as Black Friday. But prices dont always dip as high as Black Friday. Its possible to see the same deal advertised $200 off, perhaps but the actual price has quietly gone up $100. So while the mattress might still be cheaper than its full price, it would be more affordable if you bought it in November, February, or March. Best Mattress For Parkinson Patients

This is true for both July 4th and Labor Day sales. Although discounts match those during major holidays, the actual prices are often not the lowest of the year. These discounts are generally good and worth taking advantage of if your mattress needs to be replaced. Best Mattress For Parkinson Patients

What To Look For In A Mattress For Seniors

There are a few key factors to look out for when shopping for a mattress for elderly people or seniors including:

  • Pressure Relief: Seniors need a mattress that evenly distributes their body weight to avoid pain in the pressure points.
  • Edge Support: Having strong support on the edges of the mattress make it easier and safer for seniors to get in and out of bed.
  • Firmness Level: Firmness is an important factor to determine comfort. We recommend avoiding anything super soft or super firm and stick to a bed with a medium or medium-firmness firmness level.
  • Temperature Regulation: Certain mattress materials are more cooling than others. Gel beads and copper infused mattresses are generally the best cooling mattresses. Hybrid mattresses also tend to be more naturally cooling than memory foam mattresses.
  • Responsiveness: A responsive bed is one that quickly adjusts to your movements and makes it easier to move around. This also makes it easier to get in and out of bed.
  • White Glove Delivery: This convenience makes it much easier for seniors shoppers. Some mattress brands like Saatva offer free white glove delivery and old mattress removal with your purchase.

The Relationship Between Parkinsons Disease And Sleep

Friendly Beds for Parkinsons, MS, MD, Arthritis, etc.

Its unclear whether poor sleep causes parkinsonian symptoms to worsen or whether worsening parkinsonian symptoms cause poor sleep. In many cases its likely a case of bidirectionality, with each one exacerbating the other.

Fragmented sleep and sleep deprivation appear to leave the brain more vulnerable to oxidative stress, which has been tied to the development of Parkinsons disease. Parkinsons disease is not usually diagnosed until individuals have developed sufficient motor symptoms, by which time a significant portion of brain cells have already been damaged. If poor sleep quality or having sleep disorders foreshadows the development of parkinsonian symptoms, these could be useful in early diagnosis of the disease.

More research is needed to clarify the multifaceted relationship between Parkinsons disease and sleep. A better understanding of this connection may offer medical experts the unique opportunity to screen at-risk individuals and perhaps delay the onset of the disease.
