    More Study Needed On Berries And Parkinsons Disease

    Roy Alcalay, MD, is an assistant professor of neurology at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City. He says it is too soon to tell people to start snacking on berries to reduce their risk of developing Parkinson’s disease. Alcalay is also an advisor for the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation.

    “It is interesting, but needs to be replicated,” he says. “It is definitely worth more research.”

    Stuart Isaacson, MD, is excited about the new findings. He is the director of the Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Center of Boca Raton and an associate professor of neurology at Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine in Miami.

    “This is the first large study to show that people who eat berries and other sources of flavonoids have a lower risk of developing Parkinson’s disease,” he says.

    A new large, prospective, cohort study supports very preliminary evidence that beer drinking is related to a lower Parkinson risk, Honglei Chen, MD, PhD, head of the Aging and Neuroepidemiology Group, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina concluded. Further, our study suggests that high liquor consumption may be related to a higher risk of Parkinsons disease.

    The study findings were presented here at the American Neurological Association annual meeting.

    These results also highlight the importance of examining the effects of different types of alcohol when evaluating the health consequences of alcoholic drinks, he added.

    NIH-AARP Study Cohort

    Both smoking and coffee drinking have been consistently linked to a lower risk of Parkinsons, Dr. Chen told Medscape Medical News.

    Because alcohol drinking is common among adults and can have significant behavioral and health consequences, its important to understand the potential relationship of alcohol drinking with Parkinsons disease, he added.

    After controlling for potential confounders and other types of alcohol consumption, beer drinkers had a lower adjusted odds ratio of PD than nondrinkers.

    However, scientists in China have found that drinking beer could help protect the brain from a number of degenerative brain diseases.

    A team of researchers atLanzhou Universityhave published a study which claims that xanthohumol, a type of flavonoid found in hops, could help protect the brain against the onset of diseases such as Parkinsons, Alzheimers and dementia.

    According to Jianguo Fang, who led the research, xanthohumol , known for its antioxidant properties, helps guard the brain against oxidative stress, an imbalance that occurs as the body metabolises oxygyen, which is believed to be a contributing factor in the development of neurodegenerative conditions.

    In traditional Chinese medicine, hops have been used to treat a variety of ailments for centuries, said Dr Fang. The presence of a high concentration of Xn in beers might be linked to the epidemiological observation of the beneficial effect of regular beer drinking.

    Xn has attracted considerable interest because of its multiple pharmacological functions, including anti-oxidation, cardiovascular protection, anti-cancer and cancer chemoprevention, antivirus, anti-obesity, and anti-inflammation, he added.

    Mention essential tremor, and most people give you a blank look. But for nearly 5 percent of seniors, uncontrollable trembling is a part of life. The good news, a current study suggests, is a lifetime of drinking red wine significantly reduces the risk of essential tremor, the official name for a pattern of involuntary, continuous movements that intensify with age.

    The research comes from data gathered from neurological clinics across Southern and Central Italy. According to the research, published last week in the Wiley medical journal Movement Disorders, four or five glasses of red wine per day, for 30 years or so, provides the most benefit.

    In fact, when the scientists compared nearly 100 married couples, where one spouse is healthy and the other suffers from essential tremor, those who drank four or five glasses of red wine daily had an 86 percent lower risk of developing tremors. At three glasses per day it stood at a 65 percent lower risk.

    The text suggests that the antioxidants in red wine provide a long-term protective effect, but admits the results are by no means definitive. For one, studies on essential tremor, which occurs in 4.6 percent of people aged 65 years and over and may be linked to Parkinson’s disease, are few in number. Previous studies have shown that alcohol is not a risk factor in developing Parkinson’s disease. However, the jury is still out on any potential protective effects.
