Protein deposits, called Lewy bodies, develop in nerve cells in the brain regions involved in thinking, memory and movement .

A Vanity Fair article described how, in the months leading up to his death, Williams experienced a disturbing range of symptoms, including stomach cramps, indigestion, constipation, vision problems, difficulty urinating, sleep disturbances, tremors and rigidity in his left arm, stooped posture, diminished voice, anxiety, and eventually weight loss, motor impairments, and looping paranoia. When working on his final films, the Oscar-winning actor even had trouble remembering his lines.

Robin Williams’ Son Opens Up About Father’s Mental Health Saying The Star Was Frustrated And Very Uncomfortable Before His Death
Robin Williams’ son Zak has shared details about his late father, opening up about the actors’ mental health struggles. Zak sat down for an interview with “The Genius Life” podcast on Wednesday, his dad’s birthday.;
Both Zak and the host of the podcast, Max Lugavere, lost a parent to Lewy body disease, a rare disease with symptoms that resemble Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.
Williams died by suicide in 2014 at 63 years old. He had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, but an autopsy showed he had Lewy body disease.;
Zak said he saw “frustration” in his father when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
“What he was going through didn’t match one to one many Parkinson’s patients’…experience,” said Zak, 38. “He felt frustrated.”
“There was a focus issue, that frustrated him. There were issues associated with how he felt. And also from a neurological perspective, he didn’t he feel great,” said Zak. “There was just more anxiety and depression and just things he was experiencing and talking to me about that made me realize he was very uncomfortable.”
“At least from my lens, what I found was someone who was having challenges performing his craft. And that was really irritating for him,” said Zak. “When you’re performer, it goes beyond pride in what you’re performing, it’s your livelihood.”
Zak said being diagnosed with Parkinson’s was “a period for him of intense searching and frustration.”

What Are The Symptoms Of Lewy Body Dementia
Lewy body dementia is a progressive disease, meaning it gets worse over time. People typically live with the disease for five to eight years after a diagnosis, the NIA says, but some may survive up to 20 years with the condition.
The most common symptoms include changes in thinking, movement, sleep, and behavior, per MedlinePlus. Symptoms specifically can include:
- A loss of mental function to the point where it impacts the patients daily life and activities
- Changes in concentration, attention, alertness, and wakefulness
- Visual hallucinations
- Problems with movement and posture, including slowed movements, difficulty walking, and muscle stiffness
- REM sleep behavior disorder, a condition where a person may act out vivid dreaming, talking in their sleep, have violent movements while they sleep, or fall out of bed
- Changes in behavior and mood, including depression, anxiety, and apathy
As the disease advances, people with Lewy body dementia often depend entirely on other people to care for them, the NIA says.

Nearly a year after his tragic death, Robin Williams autopsy has been uncovered and the documents show the late actor might not have had Parkinsons disease.
According to a new report, the stars autopsy does confirm he died from asphyxiation after hanging himself at his California home on August 11, 2014. The papers also reveal he had been suffering from Diffuse Lewy Body dementia at the time of his death.

Following his passing, Robins wife, Susan Schneider, 50, further claimed her husband had been diagnosed with the early stages of Parkinsons disease before he committed suicide at age 63.
But the extensive neuropathologic report, obtained by Radar Online, noted the Night at the Museum actor had a history of left upper extremity tremor, impairment of left hand movement, anxiety, depression, insomnia, paranoia and unspecified cognitive impairments. While these symptoms do align with a Parkinsons diagnosis, they are also signs of Lewy Body dementia.

Lewy Body dementia is often misdiagnosed as Alzheimers disease or Parkinsons disease, but is a unique condition, Dr. James E. Galvin, a professor of neurology and psychiatry at NYU previously told the Lewy Body Dementia Association, according to the Radar Online report.

Robin Williams frequent moments of lucidity, he said, illustrate what sets the condition apart from advanced Alzheimers, where such flashes are rarer. Ive had patients with fairly severe Lewy body dementia that will sit in clinic and make actually nuanced jokes with me, Leverenz said.
What Is Lewy Body Dementia
Lewy body dementia is one of the most common causes of dementia, according to the National Institute on Aging . Its specifically associated with abnormal deposits of a protein called alpha-synuclein in the brain. Those deposits, which are called Lewy bodies, impact chemicals in the brain, the NIA says. According to the US National Library of Medicine’s MedlinePlus resource, that can impact the following in a patient:
- Memory
- Visual perception
- Problem solving

Is There Any Treatment For Lewy Body Dementia
Like other degenerative diseases, Lewy body dementia has no known cure.;
And while some medications typically used for Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s may help with symptoms relating to cognition or movement, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, there are many risks attached.
The reason for this, Loeb explained, is that individuals with LBD are extremely sensitive to medications.
“Given the wrong drugs particularly older antipsychotics can add to or create hallucinations and can contribute to a much worsened, dangerous condition,” Loeb said.
Still, Loeb notes that cholinesterase inhibitors, which are often used for people with Alzheimer’s, can help improve cognition and alertness in patients with Lewy body dementia. It is worth speaking with a neurologist to determine which prescriptions can work best to mitigate symptoms of LBD.

Robin Williams was born in Chicago, Illinois on July 21, 1951. The son of an executive for the Ford Motor Company and a former fashion model, Williams was eager to entertain at an early age. From family members to classmates, the future comedian simply wanted to make everyone laugh.

Parkinson’s. ALS. Cancer. HIV. Ebola. Leukemia. Alzheimer’s. These are just a few of the diseases that elicit enormous fear in all of us not just celebrities. As it turns out, Robin Williams was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and was in the early stages of the disease.
Robin’s sobriety was intact and he was brave as he struggled with his own battles of depression, anxiety as well as early stages of Parkinson’s Disease, which he was not yet ready to share publicly. Parkinson’s is a degenerative disease that affects the central nervous system. While it’s not as deadly as other diseases, there is no cure and its cause is unknown. Here in the U.S. there are about 50,000 to 60,000 new cases each year and there are about 1 million people with PD. According to the National Parkinson’s Foundation , the CDC ranks complications from Parkinson’s as the 14th leading cause of death in the U.S. and they estimate about 4-6 million suffer from PD worldwide.

Newfound Challenges For Patients And Families
Lewy body dementia can be a harrowing experience for both patients and their families.
Getting a diagnosis can be a matter of months- to yearslong doctor shopping, Galvin said.
Executive dysfunction can lead to behaviors that family members initially perceive as bad judgments. Delusions can make them frustrated and fearful.
As a caregiver, I think one of the challenges is recognizing that we cannot use the same skills and interpersonal dynamics that we came to rely on in our relationship with the person with LBD, Taylor said.
We have to develop new ones because you cannot reason with somebody who is having a hallucination or delusion. Sometimes you have to more step into their reality and empathize learn a new way to offer assistance without them feeling like theyre being treated like a child.
Zak Talked About How Hard The Experience Was For Both Robin And His Family
“When he died by suicide, had progressed, but he was only really two years in. I don’t want to say it was a short periodit felt a lot longer than it actually wasbut it was a period for him of intense searching and frustration,” Zak said on the podcast. “From my lens, it felt so sad for me because I loved him so much as a dad, but also he was one of my best friends, and we spent so much time together. For him to confide in me and share his experience, it’s frightening, you know, and I have a lot of empathy for family members or people going through similar or the same experience because it’s just devastating.”

Why Is It Difficult To Diagnose Lewy Body Dementia
Lewy body dementia’s similarities to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s pose a challenge for doctors.;
Because early symptoms of DLB are similar to Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s disease dementia akin to Parkinson’s, individuals often get diagnosed with the more common disorder as opposed to LBD.
“It can take quite some time to get the correct diagnosis and it is not unusual, unfortunately, for it to take 1 to 3 years,” Loeb said.
Loeb points out that it is key for family members of patients to keep track of all symptoms, as even unexpected symptoms are often linked to LBD. In the case of Robin Williams, Schneider Williams pointed out that “a sudden ad prolonged spike in fear and anxiety can be an early indication of LBD.”
Zak Went Through His Own Struggles After Robin’s Death
After his dad died, Zak explained that he self-medicated with alcohol. “When I spoke with a psychiatrist, I was diagnosed with PTSD,” said Zak, who has now been sober for four years.
Zak has since become a mental health advocate, and the owner of Pym, a company that makes “mood chews” that “are made with amino acids and adaptogens that target the body’s hormone levels to manage stress and anxiety.”
